March 1971 MLB News and Transactions

The Baltimore Orioles have signed free agent RP Orlando Pena. The 37 year old was 3-0 with a 6.08 ERA in 13 games for the Pirates in 1970. Pena led the league in losses in 1963 with 20 and led the league in HRs given up with 40 in 1964.

The Chicago White Sox have traded 2B Bobby Knoop to the Kansas City Royals in exchange for 2B Luis Alcaraz. The 32 year old Knoop hit .247 with 8 HRs and 42 RBIs in 137 games for the White Sox in 1970. Knoop is a 4-time Gold Glover and was an 1966 All Star. Knoop led the league in triples with 11 and with 7 Sac Fly's in 1966. The 29 year old Alcaraz hit .208 with 1 HR and 10 RBIs in 41 games for the Royals.

The New York Yankees have released SP Mike McCormick. The 32 year old McCormick was 3-9 with 2 saves, a 5.93 ERA in 26 games (15 starts) with the Yankees (7) and Giants (19) in 1970. McCormick won the 1967 Cy Young Award and was a 2-time All Star. He led the league with 22 wins in 1967 and in 1960 led the league with a 2.70 ERA. McCormick suffered from a pinched nerve throughout most of 1970.

The Milwaukee Brewers have released LF Russ Snyder. The 36 year old Snyder hit .223 with 0 HRs and 19 RBIs in 73 games for the Brewers in 1970. Snyder helped the Orioles win the 1966 World Series, primarily in a defensive capacity. Snyder was voted 3rd in the 1959 AL Rookie of the Year award voting.

The Oakland Athletics have signed free agent 1B Tommy Davis. The 32 year old hit .293 with 9 HRs and 89 RBIs in 134 games in 1970 for the Cubs (13), Athletics (61) and Astros (60). The 2-time All Star led the league in hits in 1962 with 230. Davis was released by the Cubs in the off-season.

The Chicago White Sox have traded RF Tommy McCraw to the Washington Senators in exchange for LF Ed Stroud. The 30 year old McCraw hit .271 with 5 HRs and 26 RBIs in 112 games for the White Sox in 1970. McCraw debuted in the MLB on June 4th, 1963. The 31 year old Stroud hit .234 with 0 HRs and 37 RBIs in 123 games for the Senators. He led the league with 14 triples in 1970.

The New York Mets have traded SP Dean Chance and Bill Denehy to the Detroit Tigers in exchange for Jerry Robertson. The 29 year old Chance was 8-12 with a 2.75 ERA in 39 games in 1970 for the Mets (1) and Indians (38). Chance was the 1964 Cy Young Award winner and is a 2-time All Star. Chance led the league with 39 starts in 1967, wins in 1964 with 20 and twice led the league in IPs in 1964 (278) and 1967 (283). In 1964 he also led the league with 1.65 ERA. With the Mets loaded at SP it was the bull-pen or trade for Chance. The 25 year old Denehy did not pitch in 1970 in the MLB, the last time he was in the MLB was in 1968 with the Senators. The 27 year old Robertson was 6-12 with 3 saves, a 4.96 ERA in 41 games (15 starts) for the Tigers in 1970. Robertson was ranked the MLBs 18th prospect in April 1969.

The Minnesota Twins have released SP Luis Tiant. The 30 year old was 4-8 with a 4.78 ERA in 17 games (15 starts) for the Twins in 1970. Tiant was an All Star in 1968 when he led the league with a 1.60 ERA. Tiant also led the league in shutouts in 1966 (5) and 1968 (9). Tiant missed much of 1970 with an cracked bone in his right shoulder. With Tiant pulling a muscle in his rib cage during spring training, the Twins feel he may be finished as a pro pitcher.

The Chicago White Sox have signed free agent RF Mike Hershberger. The 31 year old hit .231 with 2 HRs and 5 RBIs in 38 games for the Brewers in 1970. Milwaukee released Hershberger in November 1970 after the season. Hershberger led he league with 7 Sac Flys in 1966. Hershberger is in his 2nd duty with the White Sox as he debuted for them in the MLB in 1961.

The Cincinnati Reds have signed free agent RP Joe Gibbon. The 35 year old was 5-1 with 3 saves, a 2.55 ERA in 33 games for the Pirates in 1970. Gibbon was released by the Pirates in October 1970, Gibbon expressed excitement in playing with Pete Rose, Johnny Bench, Tony Perez and manager Sparky Anderson.

The Cleveland Indians have signed free agent RP Camilo Pascual. The 37 year old was 0-0 with a 9.00 ERA in 1 game for the Dodgers in 1970. Pascual is a 5-time All Star. The Dodgers released Pascual in August 1970. Pascual led the league 3 times in strikeouts, 1961 (221), 1962 (206) and 1963 (202). The veteran has seen his playing time and his ability to start declined since 1969.
