The Athletics lead the Series 1-0


With 2-outs in the bottom of the 5th, Sal Bando hits a 2-run double to score Joe Rudi and Dick Green. After an intentional walk to Reggie Jackson, Gene Tenace hits a 2-run single that scores Rick Monday and Sal Bando and the Athletics open up a 6-1 lead.

Athletics SP Blue Moon Odom was named the player of the game, he allowed 5 hits and struck out 6 to go 2-0 with a 1.59 ERA in 2 starts in the post season.

Johnny Bench follows with a single that May scores on, Bench moves to 2nd on the throw. Tommy Helms plates Bench from 2nd with a single up the middle to give the Reds a commanding 5-0 lead.

Reds SP Jim Merritt was named the player of the game, he allowed 5 hits and struck out 2 to improve to 1-0 with a 1.76 ERA in 2 starts in the post season.

Reds CF Bobby Tolan was 2 for 5 with a HR and RBI.

Reds 1B Lee May was 2 for 4 with 2 doubles and an RBI.

With the game tied 2-2 in the bottom of the 9th and 2-out, Lee May hits a single. May moves to 3rd on Tony Perez's single through the infield on the right side. Before throwing a pitch to Bernie Carbo, Athletics RP Bob Locker throws a pickoff to 1B for an error and May scores from 3rd for the odd walk off win.

Reds SP Jim McGlothlin was named the player of the game. McGlothlin allowed 4 hits and struck out 7 over 6 innings to go to 1-0 with a 0.61 ERA in 2 starts in the post season.

The Athletics scored 14 runs over the final 3 innings to wallop the Reds. Leading 3-1 going into the top of the 7th, the Athletics scored 4 to take a 7-1 lead and the rout was on.

Athletics RF Reggie Jackson was named the player of the game. Jackson making a name for himself with his hitting in October was 2 for 4 with 2 HRs and 5 RBIs. He is now hitting .273 with 4 HRs and 10 RBIs in 9 post season games. Jackson was the AL Championship MVP in 1969.

Athletics CF Rick Monday was 2 for 5 with a double, HR and 6 RBIs.

In the top of the 7th with the Athletics leading 3-2, with 1-out and Lee May on 1st after a single, Johnny Bench hits a double off the wall in CF to score May. Now with 2-out and Bench at 3rd, Woody Woodward hits a liner into shallow LF to score Bench. The Reds score 2 and take a 4-3 lead.

Reds SP Jim Merritt is named the player of the game allowing 6 hits and striking out 4 over 6 innings. Merritt is now 2-0 with a 2.11 ERA in 3 starts in the 1970 post season.

The Athletics win the World Series 4-3


With the game still scoreless in the bottom of the 4th, with 1-out and Sal Bando at 3rd after a walk, a wild pitch and a Reggie Jackson flyout to RF that moved Bando up 90 feet, Gene Tenace hits a single out of he reach of he Reds 2B into RF to score Bando and he only run of the game.

Athletics SP Vida Blue was the player of the game with his complete game 5 hitter in which he struck out 11. Blue is now 1-1 with a 2.57 ERA in 3 post season starts.

Reds SP Jim McGlothlin allowed 5 hits and struck out 4 over 8 innings.

Athletics C Gene Tenace was 2 for 3 with the GW RBI.

The Oakland Athletics are the 1970 World Champs.

For the Athletics, it was the franchises 6th World Series win. RF Reggie Jackson was named the World Series MVP as he hit .292 with 4 HRs and 11 RBIs.
