The 1970 National League Championship Series Preview
The
Cincinnati Reds took a while to get this season rolling this year. They kept pretty close to .500 ball right up until the end of May and trailed the league leading Dodgers by 5 games. Nearing the All Star Break, the Reds were still 5.5 games behind now the Braves at 57-49. It was after that the Reds caught fire and finished the last 62 days of the season at 40-16 and were tied for the lead in the NL West on September 1st with the Braves, then never really looking back.
The Reds simply hit the ball, they ranked pretty much in the top 3 in the NL in all offensive categories including leading the league with extra base hits. The Reds also are strong defensively at all 9 positions with above average pitching. The Reds were pretty much injury free all season and were aided by the emergence of
Gary Nolan and
Jim Merritt as being bonafide starters in the Majors.
Wayne Granger led the league in appearances with 78, he closed the season with 17 saves. C
Johnny Bench proved that his 33 HRs in 1969 were not a fluke and he has the makings of a superstar. RF
Pete Rose led the league in at bats with 671, hits with 217 and doubles with 38. Rose continues to be a hit machine.
The
New York Mets took over the NL East division on May 2nd and held on the rest of the way. Even a horrible August allowed the Pirates back in it and within 1 1/2 games, the Mets closed out the last 30 games 20-10.
The Mets used superior pitching to clinch the NL East. They almost led every pitching category including 2.99 ERA, 3.07 Starters ERA, 540 runs allowed, .228 opposition batting average and 1158 strikeouts.

Jim McAndrew had a breakout season improving on his 6-10 with a 3.78 ERA in 21 starts in 1969 for the Mets. SP
Tom Seaver led the league with 275 strikeouts and a well controlled 1.03 Whip. SP
Gary Gentry became one of he leaders in ERA improving on his 3.16 ERA in his rookie season in 1969. CL
Tug McGraw led he NL with 23 saves and appeared in 71 games for the Mets. Rookie RF
Ken Singleton showed signs of stardom for the Mets. The MLB's 20th ranked prospect copped the August Rookie of the Month honor.
