Friday, May 18, Year I

We called up P Tim Carrol (26-R) from Vancouver (AAA) to make a start tomorrow in the place of the injured Terry Melton. To make room on the roster, we waived 1B Joe Harrison and designated him for assignment. After he clears waivers, we'll put him back on the active roster and send Carrol back to Vancouver, unless he has a brilliant game and we decide to keep him.

We are in sunny San Diego to play a 3 game series over the weekend. They just split 4 games here with Oakland. This is the first time we have met them this season. The Padres are currently 9th in scoring with 3.5 runs per game (Portland is 10th with a lower 3.5). They are 7th in runs allowed with 3.9 per game (Portland is still #1 at 3.2, but just barely).

Portland Beavers (21-18 .538 2 GB tied for 2nd place in the PCL West) at
San Diego Padres (17-22 .436 6 GB in 5th place in the PCL West)

POR: Lonny Tomski (27-R 0-2 3.86 ERA) Rookie vs. SD: Paul Jones (25-R 4-0 3.19 ERA) Rookie

Jones is 4-0 even though he has walked twice as many as he has struck out (24 to 12). Right-handers have had a very tough time hitting him so far (.200).

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: Jack Murphy Stadium
Weather: 68 F, Clear Skies with a 7 MPH wind blowing out to center.
Attendance: 24,668

Top of the First:
Dale Ainsworth grounds a hit into right. Perry Templet, who is cold as ice, grounds into a force at 2nd, 4-6. Gary Long grounds into a force at 2nd, 1-4. Jeff Austin flies out to center.

Bottom of the First:
Hal Baumgardner grounds out to short. Mike Fahy grounds out to the pitcher. Roger Rojas strikes out! 1-2-3!

Bottom of the Second:

Tony Baez leads off with a line drive to right that just clears the fence. 1 to 0, Padres.

Top of the Fourth:
Gary Long and Jeff Austin lead off with singles and Randy James walks to load the bases up with no outs. Can we score? And if we do, will it be more than one run? Gordon Saunderson grounds out to 1st, 3-1, and Long scores to tie the game at 1. Dennis Webb pops out to short... They walk Dave Lesley intentionally to get to P Lonny Tomski, who had a hit his first time up. He strikes out.... When you load the bases up with no outs, the expected runs scored are supposed to be close to 3 runs...

Bottom of the Fourth:

With 1 out, Otis Smith singles and Lee Dukes draws a walk. With 2 outs, Rance Haynes bloops one over the second baseman for a hit and Smith scores. 2 to 1, Padres.

Bottom of the Fifth:

With 2 outs and the bases empty, Roger Rojas hits a home run. 3 to 1, Padres.

Top of the 9th:
Paul Jones, the starter with no stuff is still in there and we have only had 4 hits off him. Remember when Baseball America claimed we would lead our division in runs scored? Hah! PH Glenn Pearce grounds a hit into center. New Pitcher: Frank Esparza (32-R), their closer. He has walked 16 in 18.1 IP with 20 SO. Dennis Webb grounds into a force at 2nd, 4-6, for the first out. Dave Lesley draws a walk to put the tying run on base. Howard McNeal, who came on in a double switch earlier, strikes out... 2 down. Dale Ainsworth, who was batting .182 in May coming into today, triples to right!!! 2 runs score and the game is tied at 3!!! Perry Templet, who is colder than cold, gets walked intentionally. Gary Long grounds out to 3rd.

Bottom of the Ninth:
New Pitcher: Barry Chapman (26-R). He gets them out 1-2-3!

Extras!

Top of the Tenth:
New Pitcher: Rollin Orleans (31-L), rated very highly by Dave Dafoe. With 1 out, Randy James reaches on an error by SS Ernesto Najarro, but with 2 outs, he gets caught stealing.

Bottom of the Tenth:
New Pitcher: Don Schmidt (26-R). Their 3-4-5 hitters go down 1-2-3 with 2 strikeouts!

Top of the Eleventh:
Howard McNeal gets a 2 out hit and then steals 2nd. They walk lefty Dale Ainsworth intentionally to get to lefty Perry Templet, who I cannot pinch hit for, because I have no one else who can play the outfield. Besides I only have #3 catcher Phil Parker, a switch-hitter who cannot hit lefties, and Manny "3 for 30" Jimenez left on the bench. Templet grounds out to 2nd.

Bottom of the Eleventh:
With 1 out, Butch Nelson singles. They send up Rick Haynes (34-L) to pinch hit. Call to the Bullpen: Jerry Wilhelm (32-L). Haynes flies out to left and then Nelson tries to steal and gets gunned down!

Top of the Twelfth:
New Pitcher: Danny Gilmore (28-R). Started the season in AAA and has only thrown 3.1 innings for the Padres, but has yet to give up a hit. Gary Long walks on 4 pitches, but that is all we get.

Bottom of the Twelfth:
New Pitcher: Lou Hertzberg (29-L). He is the last reliever we have left. This is the first time I have used all 5 Bullpen arms in one game. He gets them out in order!

Top of the Thirteenth:
We go down in order.

Bottom of the Thirteenth:
Roger Rojas leads off with a single and steals 2nd. We walk Tony Baez intentionally. Otis Smith grounds into a force at 2nd, 3-6, and the winning run is 90 feet from home with 1 out. C Gary Doss, a 29 year old rookie backup catcher, lines a hit to center to win the game....

Lost - 4 to 3 in 13 innings

We had 7 whole hits and made 1 error
San Diego had 10 hits and made 3 errors

You should not win ball games when you make 3 errors....
We have lost 3 games in a row for the first time this season.
Remember when we were in First Place? Both San Francisco and Los Angeles won today and now we are in sole possession of the Third spot in the division.

Lonny Tomski went 5.1 innings, allowed 3 runs, 7 hits, 2 home runs, 2 walks and struck out 1. At bat, he had a hit. I do not think he is the answer to the question "Who should be in our starting rotation?"
RHP Antoine Redd pitched 2.2 scoreless and hitless innings, walked 1 and struck out 2.
RHP Barry Chapman pitched 1 perfect inning.
RHP Don Schmidt pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, allowed 1 hit and struck out 3.
LHP Jerry Wilhelm faced 2 batters and got them both out.
LHP Lou Hertzberg (L 1-1) went 1.1 innings, allowed 1 run, 2 hits and an intentional walk.

Paul Jones went 8 innings, gave us 1 run, 5 hits, 2 walks (1 INT) and struck out 3. At bat, he had a hit.
RHP Danny Gilmore (W 1-0) pitched 2 scoreless, hitless innings, walked 1 and struck out 1. He has now pitched 5.1 hitless innings since being called up from AAA.

RF Dale Ainsworth had 2 hits with a super clutch triple and an intentional walk and 2 RBI. PH Glenn Pearce had a hit.
