Friday, May 11, Year I

2B Gary Long needs a day off, so we are going to let Dave Lesley (26-R) try his hand there.

Kansas City Royals (17-16 .515 4 GB tied for 3rd place in the PCL East) at
Portland Beavers (19-14 .576 in 1st place in the PCL West)

KC: Len Ringstad (26-L 3-1 3.18 ERA) vs. POR: Frank Martin (26-R 3-2 2.37 ERA)

We were scheduled to face Ringstad last week, but the game was rained out. His control is a bit shaky with 5.9 BB/9, but otherwise is a tough customer. He leads the PCL with 8.4 SO/9.

Top of the First:
Alejandro Prieto grounds out to 1st, unassisted. Ed Gladney strikes out looking! Ricky Rodriguez doubles to right center. Tony Olson strikes out looking!

Bottom of the First:
Jeff Schottler strikes out, but at least it was swinging... Howard McNeal grounds a 1-2 pitch up the middle for a hit. I wish I could play 4 outfielders every day and no shortstop... 3-2 pitch to Dale Ainsworth. McNeal is on the move and Ainsworth strikes out, but McNeal is safe at 2nd. Jeff Austin grounds out to 1st, unassisted.

Bottom of the Second:
Randy James leads off with a double and then both Dave's (Lesley and Benya) take 3-2 pitches for ball 4's to load the bases up with no outs and the Mighty Manny "1 for 23" Jimenez up to bat. He grounds one past the shortstop for a hit and James scores! 1 to 0, Beavers! After P Frank Martin strikes out, Jeff Schottler grounds into a 6-4-3 double play...

Top of the Fourth:
Ricky Rodriguez leads off with his second double in as many trips and then Tony Olson singles up the middle, but CF Jeff Schottler throws Rodriguez out at the plate! With 2 outs, a wild pitch sends Olson over to 2nd. John Brockman then singles him home to tie the game at 1 apiece.

Top of the Fifth:
With 2 outs, Alejandro Prieto singles, steals 2nd and scores on a double by Ed Gladney. 2 to 1, Royals.

Bottom of the Fifth:
Jeff Schottler reaches on a two base throwing error by 3B Tony Olson. With 1 out, Dale Ainsworth beats out an infield hit and then steals 2nd. Jeff Austin singles to right to score both runners! 3 to 2, Beavers! Austin steals 2nd, but need not have not have risked it because Randy James hit a home run down the left field line that just stays fair!! 5 to 2, Beavers. Ringstad is pulled.

Top of the Sixth:
Tony Olson singles to lead off the inning and then Frank Martin issues back-to-back walks to load the bases up. The Bullpen is scrambled, but Martin strikes out the next two and then gets a ground ball out to escape unscathed!

Top of the Seventh:

New Pitcher: Lou Hertzberg (29-L). Alejandro Prieto leads off with a double and Ed Gladney beats out and infield and then steals 2nd to put runners at 2nd and 3rd with no outs. Hertzberg then follows Frank Martin's script and strikes out the next two! But before he can induce Pedro Fuentes to ground out to end the inning, he uncorks a wild pitch and Prieto scores. 5 to 3, Beavers. Fuentes then singles to left and Gladney scores. 5 to 4, Beavers. John Brockman walks on 4 pitches. Call the Bullpen: Antoine Redd (31-R). They pinch hit for Mitch Gingrich with Julio Hernandez (28-L), who is batting ..314 on the season. 3-2 pitch is ball 4 to load the bases up. Jose Muniz pops one to shallow center and Perry Templet, who came into the game last inning, makes the catch!

Bottom of the Seventh:
On the Hill: John Curtis (31-R), beginning his second inning of work. Howard McNeal draws a walk, but Dale Ainsworth grounds into a 5-4-3 double play. Jeff Austin then homers to left! 6 to 4, Beavers!
