Thursday, May 10, Year I

I sat down with SS Dave Lesley (26-R) and told him we were going to give him a day or two off and then start over as if a new season was beginning. The past would be forgotten and he could make a brand new start. I did this because I could not find a decent replacement anywhere. I called around to every GM that had a shortstop I would like and they all asked for the moon. Our number #1 shortstop at Vancouver is hurt and he made 2 errors in the 4 games he has played, anyway. The #2 shortstop there is a slacker and I won't have him on my team. None of the ones we have at lower levels would be able to hit a lick in the majors. Manny Jimenez (29-R) our backup here can field. Though his range is not very good, he at least will not make errors. But he is 1 for 21 at the plate. So, we will start Manny a game or two and see what he does. If he hits some, we will play him another game or two, but eventually, I am afraid we will have to go back to Dave Lesley. But let Lesley think that I have all the confidence in the world in him....

The Kansas City Royals are here to begin a 4 game series that will take us through the weekend and close out this home stand. They just won 2 of 3 in Seattle. We beat them twice in Kansas City last week, but both games were won 3 to 2. They are currently 4th in runs scored with 4.5 per game (Portland is #10 with 3.5). They are 10th in runs allowed with 4.5 per game (Portland is still #1 with 3.1).

Kansas City Royals (17-15 .531 4 GB in 3rd place in the PCL East) at
Portland Beavers (18-14 .563 in 1st place in the PCL West)

KC: Steve Byrd (32-R 5-1 3.31 ERA) vs. POR: Terry Melton (26-R 5-2 2.33 ERA)

Byrd is their #1 starter. His only loss is to us, but he pitched well in that game.

Top of the First:

Alejandro Prieto grounds out to 1st, unassisted. Joe Harrison cannot hit, but at least he can still field well. Randy Schmitt grounds out to short. That's one for Manny. Ricky Rodriguez grounds out to 3rd. 1-2-3!

Bottom of the First:
Perry Templet, who's batting average had been steadily dropping of late, strikes out looking. Jeff Schottler strikes out looking... Gary Long had better at least strike out swinging... He flies out to right.

Bottom of the Second:
With 1 out, Randy James and Dennis Webb get back-to-back singles and Joe Harrison draws a walk to load the bases up for Mighty Manny "1 for 21" Jimenez. The first pitch to him plunks him! A run is forced in! Mighty Manny! 1 to 0, Beavers! P Terry Melton then singles to right and another run is in! 2 to 0, Beavers! Perry Templet grounds into an inning ending 5-4-3 double play...

Bottom of the Third:
Jeff Schottler leads off with a hit and goes to 3rd on a double by Gary Long. He scores on a fly ball by Dale Ainsworth. 3 to 0, Beavers. Randy James singles and Long scores! 4 to 0, Beavers! Dennis Webb becomes the second Beaver to get plunked by Byrd. But Joe Harrison grounds into a 5-4-3 double play to end the inning.

Top of the Fourth:

With 1 out, Randy Schmitt becomes the Royals' first base runner with a grounder up the middle for a hit. But Ricky Rodriguez bounces one back to the box for a 1-4-3 double play!

Through 4 innings: Royals - 1 hit; P Terry Melton - 2!!

Top of the Fifth:

My bad; I jinxed Melton. The first two batters get a hit for the Royals, but then the next three make outs!

Won - 4 to 0

Melton's 3rd Shutout of the season!! I think he has to be considered our ace now; sorry Ron Wolf.

We had 8 hits and made no errors
Kansas City had 7 hits and made no errors

Terry Melton (W 6-2) went 9 shutout innings (CG), allowed 7 hits, no walks and struck out 6. At bat, he had 2 hits and an RBI.

Steve Byrd (L 5-2) went 7 innings, gave us 4 runs, 7 hits, 1 walk, 2 HBP and struck out 6. Both of his losses have been to us.

2B Gary Long hit 2 doubles and scored a run. 3B Randy James had 2 hits, scored a run and had an RBI. SS Manny Jimenez went 0 for 2 with 2 SO, but got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and thus had an RBI. He also made no errors. He will start at least one more game.
