Golden Boy
Clifford Odets play, Golden Boy, debuted at the Belasco Theatre 11/4/1937. Although Odets had John Garfield in mind for the role of Joe Bonaparte the Group Theatre production cast Luther Adler in the role.
In 1939 a film version was released. Garfield's studio didn't release him to pursue the role. The, then, unknown Bill Holden took the role instead and was launched into stardom. Garfield finally got a shot at the role in 1952 shortly before his death in a revival of the play. In the 60's it was rewritten as a musical starring Sammy Davis Jr. as Joe Wellington.
