He was the 12th overall pick in that year's B Leagues Draft. 94 MPH over-the-top fastball with a curve, changeup, splitter and circle change. The changeup is his best pitch, but all are very good, except the circle change, which is a work in progress. Not a good move to first. Decent bunter. Likable young man. Was 1-0 with and did not allow a run in 18 IP with only 8 H and 5 BB with 10 SO.

Selected in the 2nd round of the 2002 B Leagues Draft. 93 MPH over-the-top fastball with a very good curve and solid changeup. Decent move to first and an average fielder. Below average bunter. A hard worker and a leader in the clubhouse. Was 1-0 with a 6.40 ERA this Spring, pitching mostly well, but a few bad pitches ended up the seats.
2002 (MLB): 13-12 3.39 ERA 33 GS 225.1 IP 199 H 17 HR 64 BB 107 SO 2.6/4.3 BB/SO per 9 as a rookie for Portland

Acquired in a trade with Pittsburgh in May, 2002. 91 MPH fastball with with a nasty curve and an excellent changeup. He pitches up in the zone and gets a lot of fly balls. About as good at holding runners close to first as a right-hander can be, but a poor fielder. Average bunter and a decent hitter for a pitcher (.209 career BA). Was 1-0 with a 3.18 ERA this Spring only walking 2.4 per 0 IP with 9.5 S)/9. Control, or lack thereof, has been his biggest weakness.

Fielders
Catchers

Jim Shippy
32 year old catcher who bats and throws right-handed from Houston, Texas. 6' 0" 211 lbs. (+5) $660,000. Arbitration. Acquired in a trade with Cincinnati in May, 2001. Decent receiver with an average arm. Average runner who likes to steal bases if given a chance. Very hard worker and a spark plug in the clubhouse. Plays the game all out. He cost us a bunch of money with the good year he had last year. I hope he can keep it up, but he never hit before in his life... We can't afford to keep the old Shippy on the new salary... Hit .218 with 1 HR and a .592 OPS this Spring.
2002 (MLB): .274/.334/.409 in 430 AB with 9 HR and 56 RBI and 9 SB for Portland
MLB (2 yrs): .265/.325/.377 in 584 AB with 10 HR and 75 RBI and 9 SB for Cincinnati (.22) and Portland (1.78).

Rick Mansoor

Excellent receiver with a below average arm. No speed at all, but will steal a base if the battery is napping. Was maybe even a bigger surprise than Jim Shippy with his hitting. Hit .292 for us after hitting .234 in A Ball the year before. Hit .250 with 0 HR and a .650 OPS this Spring.
2002 (MLB): .292/.343/.425 in 120 AB with 3 HR and 14 RBI and 1 SB for Portland

Infielders
Glenn Snowden
26 year old first baseman who bats and throws right-handed from Prestonsburg, Kentucky (a very small coal mining town in the mountains of southeastern Kentucky). 6' 3" 212 lbs. (+5) $1,300,000. Signed through 2012! An Original Beaver. Won the Gold Glove at first base in 2001 and a Silver Bat in 2002. A 2-time All-Star. Did not win a Gold Glove in 2002 when his errors skyrocketed from 9 to 20. A below average runner. A very hard worker and a fan favorite. Hit .286 with 3 HR and an .947 OPS this Spring.
2002 (MLB): .308/.386/.551 in 595 AB with 38 HR and 113 RBI and 0 SB for Portland
MLB (2 yrs): .312/.390/.555 in 1174 AB with 73 HR and 226 RBI and 0 SB for Portland

Oscar Trejo
30 year old first baseman who bats and throws right-handed from San Mateo, Venezuela. 6' 2" 218 lbs. $200,000. Arbitration. Signed as a free agent this March. Decent fielder with limited range. No speed. Hard worker and a leader in the clubhouse. Was the PCL Championship Series MVP in 2001. Hit .323 with 2 HR and an .861 OPS this Spring.
2002 (MLB): .265/.346/.469 in 113 AB with 6 HR and 19 RBI and 0 SB for Los Angeles

Juan Rojas
24 year old second baseman who bats from both sides of the plate and throws right-handed from Torreon, Mexico. 6' 0" 176 lbs. $50,000. Minimum. Drafted in the 3rd round of the 2001 B Leagues Draft. Excellent range and a very quick release. Decent hands and arm. Can play anywhere in the infield and some outfield, too. Average runner, but not a very good base stealer and not very smart on the base paths. A crossword puzzler. Hit .137 with an .424 OPS this Spring. I hope he hits, because we do not have a lit of other options...
2002 (MLB): .239/.298/.298 in 372 AB with 1 HR and 28 RBI and 0 SB for Portland
2002 (A): .242/.329/.305 in 128 AB with 2 HR and 16 RBI and 0 SB for Vancouver
MLB (2 yrs): .222/.282/.275 in 477 AB with 1 HR and 32 RBI and 0 SB for Portland

Fernando Mexicano
22 year old third baseman who bats left-handed and throws right-handed from Culebra, Puerto Rico. 6' 1" 178 lbs. (0) $52,500. Arbitration. Selected in the first round (2nd overall pick) of the 2001 B Leagues Draft. Won a Silver Bat in 2002. An average (or below) fielding third baseman with a solid arm. Can play First and anywhere in the outfield. He is probably best suited defensively as a corner outfielder, but having a 3rd baseman with his bat is too much temptation to resist. Slow runner and not aggressive on the bases, but will surprise with a steal every once in a while. Like Juan Rojas, he likes to do crossword puzzles in the clubhouse. Hit .295 with 3 HR and an .949 OPS this Spring.
2002 (MLB): .295/.376/.545 in 589 AB with 38 HR and 118 RBI and 2 SB for Portland

An excellent fielder who can play anywhere on the diamond, except catcher. Good base runner with the above average speed and will steal a base. Excellent bunter. Hit .152 with 0 HR and a .351 OPS this Spring.
2002 (MLB): .253/.303/.320 in 372 AB with 2 HR and 35 RBI and 5 SB as a rookie for Baltimore

An original Beaver. Decent range, but a very strong arm with a super quick release and very good hands. Can play anywhere but catcher. Very fast and a good base stealer and very aggressive base runner. Hit .180 with 1 HR and a .563 OPS this Spring.
2002 (MLB): .278/.322/.366 in 413 AB with 7 HR and 46 RBI and 20 SB for Portland

MLB (2 yrs): .263/.315/.348 in 799 AB with 10 HR and 80 RBI and 42 SB for Portland

Outfielders
Kim Springer
22 year old left fielder who bats and throws left-handed from North Westport, Massachusetts (12 miles southwest of Fall River). 6' 5" 197 lbs. (+1) $50,000. Minimum. We used up his rookie status last season by a handful of AB. Selected in the 1st round (5th overall) in the 2002 B Leagues Draft. Adequate fielder and runner, but will steal a base and is a heads up base runner. Does not have the arm to play right and his range is only average at 22 years old, which means it will not be very good at all when he is 30. I tried to trade him this winter, but no one would give me good value for him. We'll try again next winter. He is easy to get along with. Hit .236 with 0 HR and a .621 OPS this Spring.
2002 (MLB): .257/.301/.375 in 136 AB with 3 HR and 13 RBI and 3 SB as a rookie for Portland
2002 (A): .300/.357/.433 in 416 AB with 7 HR and 49 RBI and 8 SB for Vancouver

Carlos Lopez
28 year old left fielder who bats and throws left-handed from Oxford, Ohio (home of Miami University). 6' 2" 208 lbs. $120,000. Arbitration. Acquired in a trade with Seattle this January. Average fielder with sire hands. Can play right in a pinch, but his arm is only average. Fast runner, but not very good at stealing bases. Hard worker and a hard-nosed player, but not dirty. An enthusiastic teammate. Hit .235 with 2 HR and a .798 OPS this Spring.
2002 (MLB): .243/.312/.432 in 205 AB with 8 HR and 28 RBI and 4 SB for Seattle
MLB (2 yrs): .221/.297/.359 in 298 AB with 9 HR and 36 RBI and 5 SB for Seattle

Brian Mitchell
21 year old (22 on April 9) center fielder who bats and throws left-handed from Detroit, Michigan. 5' 10" 172 lbs. (+3) $50,000. Minimum. Selected in the 4th round of the 2001 B Leagues draft. Good range and a superior arm. Very hard worker. Very fast and will steal bases. Good bunter. Hit .220 with 0 HR and a .538 OPS this Spring. Will start versus right-handers.
2002 (MLB): .307/.351/.367 in 381 AB with 0 HR and 16 RBI and 17 SB as a rookie for Portland
2002 (A): .194/.256/.278 in 36 AB with 1 HR and 3 RBI and 2 SB for Vancouver in a rehab assignment
MLB (2 yrs): .296/.341/.350 in 432 AB with 0 HR and 18 RBI and 19 SB for Portland

Jack Hinckley
27 year old center fielder who bats right-handed and throws left-handed from White Lake Township, Michigan (a suburb of Detroit). 6' 4" 203 lbs. (0) $200,000. Arbitration. An original Beaver. Good range and a very good arm and sure hands. Very hard worker. Very fast and will steal a base. A good bunter. Hit .267 with 0 HR and a .749 OPS this Spring. Will start versus left-handers.
2002 (MLB): .292/.342/.363 in 424 AB with 2 HR and 34 RBI and 22 SB for Portland
MLB (2 yrs): .269/.327/.345 in 940 AB with 4 HR and 73 RBI and 48 SB for Portland

Larry Ballard
24 year old center fielder who bats left-handed and throws right-handed from Wellington, Florida (just west of West Palm Beach). 5' 9" 150 lbs. (+6) The weight is all muscle! $50,000. Minimum. Signed as a minor league free agent in February, 2002. Selected in the 4th round of the 2002 B Leagues Draft by Detroit, but released. Good range and a decent arm and very sure hands. Can also play 2nd base, but is not so good there. He has good range there, but is prone to errors and not so good on the pivot. Extremely fast and a smart base runner. Very hard worker and a humble gentleman. He is a weightlifter and very strong for his slight build.
2002 (MLB): .236/.311/.354 in 161 AB with 2 HR and 13 RBI and 12 SB as a rookie for Portland
2002 (A): .301/.349/.485 in 196 AB with 6 HR and 25 RBI and 6 SB for Vancouver

28 year old outfielder who bats and throws left-handed from Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic. 6' 1" 193 lbs. $575,000. Signed through 2005. Signed as a free agent this past December. Good range and a decent arm and very sure hands. Arm is not quite what I'd like in a right fielder, but he seems more comfortable in right than in center, though he has the range to play in the middle. An average runner, but will not steal a base. Good bunter. Very hard worker. Hit .286 with 0 HR and a .743 OPS this Spring.
2002 (MLB): .295/.376/.355 in 563 AB with 2 HR and 54 RBI and 0 SB for Hollywood
MLB (2 yrs): .299/.379/.374 in 1162 AB with 9 HR and 117 RBI and 0 SB for Hollywood

Disabled List

Roger Lerer
29 year old left-hander from New Milford, Connecticut (near the border with New York). 6' 0" 186 lbs. (+5) $50,000. Arbitration. An Original Beaver. 92 MPH sidearm fastball with a good slider and splitter and a crappy changeup. A very good bunter. Has a good move to first, but not as good as most lefties and is a below average fielder. He is a prankster. Was 1-0 with a 4.32 ERA this Spring. 8.1 IP, 8 H, 0 HR, 5 BB, 4 SO. He broke his elbow and will be out until August. It's always something with him, but he is not costing us much money to keep around, so why not?

Prospects ranked by Baseball America in the top 200:
C Tim Higbee (#26)
20 year old catcher who bats from both sides of the plate and throws right-handed from Shreveport, Louisiana. 6' 2" 191 lbs. Rookie. Acquired in a trade with Sacramento this January. He was drafted in the 1st round (5th overall) of this year's B Leagues Draft. Not a bad receiver as some have claimed, but he does have a below average arm. He's a very hard worker and a natural born leader. A slow runner. Won a Bronze Bat and was an All-Star in the B leagues last year. He is projected to be a big time hitter. He hit .317 with 1 HR and a .749 OPS this Spring. My expectation is that Jim Shippy will not be able to match his production from last season and Higbee will be our starting catcher by the All-Star break. In the meantime, he will get some seasoning at Vancouver (A).
2002 (B): .270/.305/.488 in 518 AB with 26 HR and 73 RBI and 0 SB for Chattanooga

SS Dave Maynard (#52)
20 year old shortstop who throws and bats right-handed from San Diego, California. 6' 2" 192 lbs. Rookie. Acquired in a trade with Sacramento this January. He has superior range, but only a decent arm. Sure hands. He is a fast runner and will steal bases. Was not invited to Spring Training. Last year he played in the low minors. He will begin the season at Evansville (C).

3B Brent Edwards (#56)
21 year old 3rd baseman who bats and throws right-handed from Steilacoom, Washington (a suburb of Tacoma). 6' 3" 183 lbs. Rookie. Drafted in the 3rd round of this year's B Leagues Draft. Has the range to play short, but is awkward around the bag on double plays. Very fast runner and likes to steal bases, but could be better at reading pitchers. A good bunter. Keeps to himself. Was not invited to Spring Training. He wil start the season at Hartford (B).
2002 (B): .269/.301/.371 in 572 AB with 3 HR and 60 RBI and 22 SB for Birmingham

SS Jose Atoige (#103)
21 year old shortstop who bats and throws right-handed from Puerto Plata, the Dominican Republic. 6' 2" 179 lbs. Rookie. Acquired in the Major League takeover of the B and C Leagues. He has good range and a very strong arm. May end up at 3rd base. Very fast runner and a hard worker. Was not invited to Spring training. He will begin the season at Hartford (B).
2002 (B): .219/.270/.264 in 462 AB with 0 HR and 31 RBI and 15 SB for Jacksonville

SP John Krawczyk (#153)
23 year old left-hander from Columbia, Maryland (15 miles southwest of Baltimore). 6' 4" 207 lbs. Rookie. Acquired in a trade with Houston this January. He was selected in the 3rd round of this year's B Leagues Draft. 94 MPH fastball with a good curve, a mediocre sinker and a crappy changeup. Not a good move to first for a left-hander and not a good fielder or bunter. Was a B League All-Star last year. He led the Midwest League in wins. He was 1-2 with a 4.05 ERA this Spring. 20 IP, 21 H, 5 HR, 6 BB, 12 SO. 5 HR is a lot... He will begin the season in Vancouver (A).
2002 (B): 16-10 2.58 ERA 35 GS 254.1 IP 211 H 10 HR 79 BB 198 SO 2.8/7.0 BB/SO per 9 for Fort Wayne

RP Seung-ook Koo (#186)
25 year old left-hander from Yongin, South Korea. 6' 2" 196 lbs. Rookie. Acquired in the Major League takeover of the B and C Leagues. 90 MPH fastball with a devastating changeup and poor curve. Gets a lot of ground balls. Good move to 1st, but only average for a left-hander. Below average fielder. A good bunter and a hard worker. Was not invited to Spring Training. He pitched in the low minors last year. I do not know how great a prospect you can be when you have not reached B Ball yet and you are 25.... He will begin the season at Evansville (C).
