Hoyt Wilhelm was a freak. He played until he was 49 IRL, so he retired after his age 46 season in your game. Even that is unusually late. You can try checking the "Retire players according to history" box on the Game Settings > League Settings > Historical page about halfway down on the left side, but I'm not sure it would've made a difference in this true outlier's case.
