The good:
  • Joey Votto has continued his amazing season, as he leads the major leagues in on base percentage. At 34 years old, he shows no signs of slowing down.
  • Jesse Winker had a solid month, bringing his batting average up to .258. It would be nice if he could hit for more power, as 35 of his 41 hits are singles.
  • Scooter Gennett has started to look like his 2017 self, as he put up a .785 OPS in May.

The bad:
  • Billy Hamilton has really struggled this month, and was recently moved to the bottom of the order. Hamilton's defense and speed are great assets, but his bat is still inconsistent.
  • Adam Duvall got on base at a .220 clip for the Month. Lucky for him, Schebler isn't doing much better. Right now the biggest weakness of our offense has definitely been the outfield.
  • Our team average of .233 ranks last in the National League.

The good:
  • Luis Castillo has met his high expectations entering this season, as he leads our pitching staff with a 1.3 WAR. I'd like to see him go deeper into games, but keeping his arm fresh for a potential postseason run is important.
  • Homer Bailey pitched to a 3.26 ERA in May. Early in the season, Bailey looked like he could lose his rotation spot, but he has since earned our trust to be a decent back-of-the-rotation pitcher.
  • Austin Brice was our best reliever this month, allowing just 1 run in 13.2 innings, striking out 13.

The bad:
  • Tyler Mahle's rookie season ended prematurely, as the righty will miss the rest of the season with a stretched elbow ligament. Mahle's last few starts were great, so replacing him will be no small task.
  • Speaking of injuries, Anthony DeSclafani has been recovering from a strained oblique slower than expected. Hopefully he will be able to make rehab starts by the end of June, but as he hasn't pitched in almost two years, he is a huge question mark.
  • Jared Hughes entered the year as our top right-handed setup man, but he has struggled all year to a 5.64 ERA.

Overall, this season has been amazing considering preseason expectations. I'm not sure we will be able to acquire much help at the trade deadline given our financial constraints, but if we're still in position to make the postseason a month from now, we might have to make upgrades. Specifically, we may be looking to acquire a corner outfielder to replace the slumping Adam Duvall.
