at St. Louis (Breechen, 15-15, 2.49)

World Series Game 1 Victory for Brecheen and St. Louis 1946

The stakes were high. Harry Brecheen was ready.

The left-hander turned in a performance for the ages at Sportsman's Park IV today, pitching a 9-inning, complete-game shutout to lead the St. Louis 1946 Cardinals to victory in Game 1 of the World Series. Brecheen held the Brooklyn 1946 Dodgers to 4 hits and 2 walks, while striking out 4. The win got the best-of-7 series off to a good start for St. Louis 1946, which now leads 1-0.

Brecheen pitched a complete game for St. Louis 1946. The left-hander was charged with no runs on 4 hits. He struck out 4 during his 127-pitch performance.

"It was a tough night at the plate," said Brooklyn 1946 manager Leo Durocher.

Breechen got all the support he would need in the 2nd inning. Enos Slaughter led off the inning with a double, but then Brooklyn starter Kirby Higbe retired the next two batters on fly outs that kept Slaughter on second. Higbe was one strike away from escaping the jam when Cardinals shortstop Marty Marion lined a 2-2 pitch into the left field bleachers for a 2-0 St. Louis lead. Third baseman Whitey Kurkowski added an RBI groundout in the bottom of the 5th.

Game 2 is scheduled for tomorrow at Sportsman's Park IV in St. Louis. The scheduled starters for the game are Hal Gregg for the Brooklyn 1946 Dodgers and Howie Pollet for the the St. Louis 1946 Cardinals.
