I have a co-worker who recently came from there and talking to her got me to check out some videos on youtube about the current situation in Venezuela. I was shocked. They went from maybe the richest country in South America to the poorest in such a short time. Their situation has been compared to that of Germany's hyper-inflation of the Weimar Republic after World War I where people are selling everything they have and they're still starving. There's a mass exodus of its people and cities that were once thriving are like ghost towns with only a smattering of homeless wandering the streets.
I wasn't surprised in the least to hear the news that the accident was caused by bandits.
