Trade Rumours Swirling in Toronto - Wells to the Red Sox?

April 5th, 2009

The Jays new General Manager Ryan Stewart has only been the GM for a day and already there are rumours abounding in Toronto about possible moves. By far the biggest rumour surrounds the Jays CF Vernon Wells. It was apparent that Wells was placed on the trade block yesterday (along with 3B Scott Rolen and CL B.J. Ryan) and apparently the Jays have had a few phone calls about the 30 yearold outfielder.

The teams rumoured to be interested in Wells services include the Texas Rangers, Chicago Cubs and Boston Red Sox. Of those 3 teams only the Red Sox have the availiable cap space to accomodate such a large contract. The Red Sox have reportedly dangled LF Jason Bay in front of the Jays as a return on Wells and if it were true it would be a fantastic deal for the Jays. Wells who is owed $115 million over the next 6 seasons vs LF Jason Bay who is in the last year of his contract and is owed just $7,000,000. The 30 yearold Bay hit .288 with 31 HR and 101 RBI split between Pittsburgh and the Red Sox.

GM Ryan Stewart was asked about any specifics on the rumours but declined to comment.
