SD: Javier Reyna (32-R 4-5 2.26) vs. POR: Frank Martin (26-R 4-4 3.29) Rookie

When the Padres score more than 1 run for him, Reyna wins, but they have scored one or fewer runs in 6 of his 10 starts. We have not faced him yet this year.

Top of the First:
Hal Baumgardner lines one back to the box and P Frank Martin catches it! Mike Fahy drives one down the line in left, but Howard McNeal catches it at the base of the wall! Roger Rojas takes a 3-2 pitch in the back. 3-2 pitch to David Shropshire and he lines one down the line in left, but Howard McNeal makes a nice running catch!

Bottom of the First:

Dale Ainsworth lines a hit down the line in left. He steals 2nd on the first pitch to Perry Templet. Templet grounds a slow one to the left side and is thrown out by the shortstop, but Ainsworth moves over to 3rd. Randy James grounds out to short and Ainsworth scores. 1 to 0, Beavers! Jeff Austin beats out an infield hit. Howard McNeal swings at a 3-1 pitch and pops out to short.

Top of the Second:
Otis Smith leads off with a walk and Ernesto Najarro singles, but Lee Dukes grounds into a 5-4-3 double play and Rance Haynes pops out to 2nd!

Bottom of the Third:

P Frank Martin leads off with an infield hit! Dale Ainsworth grounds into a force at 2nd, 6-4, and then steals 2nd. Perry Templet doubles over the center fielder's head! 2 to 0, Beavers!

Top of the Fourth:
With 1 out, David Shropshire and Otis Smith single to put runners on the corners. But P Frank Martin gets Ernesto Najarro to fly out to shallow center and he strikes out Lee Dukes!

Won - 2 to 0

P Frank Martin retired the final 9 batters in a row.

Back-to-back shutouts (both 4 hitters)! First time that has happened this season. We also have 3 in our last 5 games. This was our 9th shutout of the season! No other team in Baseball has more than 4! Terry Melton has 4 all by himself!

It always seems my teams end up having good pitching and defense and weak hitting. I do not want it that way, but since I refuse to allow a weak defender to start for me, it turns out that way most of the time.

We had 8 hits and no errors
San Diego had 4 hits and no errors

Frank Martin pitched 9 shutout innings (CG), allowed 4 hits, 2 walks, 1 HBP and struck out 2. At bat, he had a hit.

Javier Reyna (L 4-6) went 8 innings (CG), gave us 2 runs, 8 hits, no walks and struck out 1. For the 7th time in 11 starts, the Padres score 1 or fewer runs for him.

RF Dale Ainsworth had 2 hits, stole 2 bases and scored both of our runs. CF Perry Templet had 2 hits with a double and an RBI.
