The Oakland Athletics have traded 1B Tito Francona with SP Al Downing to the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for LF Steve Hovley. The 36 year old is Francona is hitting .370 with 1 HR and 9 RBIs in 23 games for the Athletics. Many say Francona was instrumental in getting the Indians back on track in 1959 when Tito was acquired from the Tigers. Diagnosed with hepatitis and an irregular heart beat, Francona was placed on a strict diet in 1957. In 1959 Francona missed out in a batting championship after a injury left him one at bat shy of qualifying. The 28 year old Downing in 5-2 with 1 save, a 2.24 ERA in 15 games including 6 starts for the Athletics. Downing made his MLB debut with the New York Yankees on July 19th, 1961. The Cuban born Rojas played just about every position over his career. In 1967 with the Phillies he did just that, including pitcher. His career ERA is 0.00..... in 1 inning pitched. It is expected that Rojas will get a fresh start with the young Royals. The 25 year old Rico has not played in the MLB this season, he hit .111 in 13 games for the Royals in 1969.
