Western League Defeats Eastern League 5-3 in Inaugural All-Star Game

Balmoral (BP) – A full house of 26,600 cheered on the Western League All-Stars as they defeated their Eastern League counterparts, 5-3, in the inaugural United Leagues All-Star Game held at Foster Field in Balmoral today.

The Eastern Leaguers got on the board early when Bryan Livesley led the top of the first inning with a triple off of pitcher Neil Guerin and scored on Louie Hetherington’s single.

But the Western League All-Stars responded in the bottom half of the inning, when singles by Robin Harney and Mo Symes off of pitcher Colm Soper put men on first and third. Harney scored from third on Okura Ito’s ground out. Further back-to-back singles by Fergus Chitty and Héctor Nájera scored another run to make 2-1 Western League after the first inning.

The Western Leaguers doubled their lead in the bottom of the fourth. Back-to-back singles by Rio Gidley and Héctor Gonzáles off of pitcher Bradley Paris again put runners on the corners. Rio Gidley would come in to score when Jayden Tennant reached first base safely on an error. A two-out single by Joe Olver allowed Héctor Gonzáles to score from second, making it 4-1 for the Western League.

The Western League would add an additional run in the fifth. Lead-off singles by James Seibert and Héctor Nájera off of pitcher Byran Newitt put runners on first and second. Harold Yoder’s sac bunt moved the runners over, allowing Rio Gidley’s sac fly to bring in James Seibert.

The Eastern League would get two runs back in the top of sixth. After Quentin Puddy singled and then was promptly picked off by Brady Murdy, Wayne Balmer reached first after being hit by a pitch and then reached second thanks to a Yoshifumi Tamura single. A passed ball allowed the runners to move up. Pinch hitter Eric Anderson then hit a double into left-center field, bringing in Balmer and Tamura to close the gap, 5-3.

But that would be all the scoring in the game. In fact, the only player to hit safely in the final 3.5 innings would be Eric Anderson, who notched his second double in the top of the ninth. He would reach third on a ground out by Damien Davis, but pinch hitter Pat Copeman could only fly out to right field to end the game.

Despite the loss, the Player of the Game honours went to the Barons’ Eric Anderson, going two for two with two doubles and two RBIs.
