Canucks tame Sharks in tight contest
10/4/1991 21.45 PST

It came down to one goal, but that’s all the Canucks needed to beat the Sharks on Friday night at the Pacific Coliseum.

Gary Valk’s goal at 13:19 of the second period, gave the Canucks the lead and ultimately the win over the upstart Sharks: 3 - 2.

Brent Gilchrist (pictured) of San Jose tied the game twice, once in the first period with a shorthanded goal, and again in the second period at even strength. It was a good effort from the winger who made the contest close.

“I thought we played well and kept the game close. Vancouver has a good squad and we’re just happy to give them a challenge now that the games count”. Gilchrist, the second star of game, said.

Opening the score tonight was Trevor Linden at 00:38 into the first period. Gilchrist tied the score later in the period at 11:29. Greg Adams of the Canucks took the lead again at 11:47 of the first. Gilchrist tied the game again at 11:14 of the second, only for Gary Valk to score the eventual winner shortly thereafter at 13:19 of the second period. Shots were 30 - 13 for Vancouver. The Canucks were 1 for 2 on the powerplay (surrendering one shorthanded goal) whereas the Sharks were 0 for 3 with the man advantage.

Missing the first game of the season with an injury was David Volek, who is out with a mild abdominal strain. Watching from the press box were defenseman Peter Popovic, and wingers Jeff Odgers and Brian Lawton.

The Sharks take on the Canucks again tomorrow, but this time down in San Jose for the team’s home opener. It’s a quick turnaround for the squad who play another 2 games at home later in the week against the Calgary Flames and the Winnipeg Jets.

“We’ll evaluate how everybody is feeling tomorrow and see who’ll get the start. (Berthiaume’s) turn will be next and we may make a few more changes throughout the line-up” added Coach Fyvie.
