PREMIER LEAGUE HOCKEY NEWS

- Injuries hit Aces, Islanders
- Arrows upset Whalers
- Lehigh Valley beat Calgary

Injuries have struck both the Toronto Aces and Charlottetown Islanders tonight. Centre Ben Magnus of the Aces, who has five goals this season, is out with a chronic back pain that the team physios are growing concerned about. They expect he'll miss the next month. Back problems also plague Mattias Malmivaara (C) of the Islanders, who has ten points this season. He will be out for as long as three weeks after a collision with an opponent in tonight's game against the Nightmare left him with a strained muscle in his back.

Game of the Day
Chicago Cougars 1 - 2 Vancouver Giants
Pacific Coliseum, Vancouver

The Giants and Cougars are on level pegging in Atlantic West tonight after Vancouver registered a win at home to give both sides a 4-5-1 record. The low-scoring affair was all level at 1-1 after two periods, but just under five minutes into the third period, Michael Guillemette scored his second goal of the night to put Vancouver up 2-1, a position they held onto until the clock ran out. The Cougars will rue their own inconsistency - the difference was particularly evident in the goalkeeping ranks. Henrik Jensen is an incredible tender but still young and developing. Colby Froehlich looked more confident and assured in net for the Giants tonight and this was largely the difference between the two teams in the final period. The Cougars were constantly on the backfoot, defending and protecting their nervous goalie, while the Giants felt confident to go on the attack.

Elsewhere in the league, the Nightmare went 3-1 up over the Islanders who are beginning to ask questions sitting at 4-7-1. The Phantoms stopped the Mustangs in their tracks with a 4-1 win in Calgary, Emil Fahlstrom scoring twice and Joe Logan stopping 26 shots to put the Valley on top. And New England went down to the Arrows, who registered their second win of the season in front of an ecstatic home crowd, finally given something to cheer when Phillipe Laliberte scored the game winner halfway through the third period.
