PREMIER LEAGUE HOCKEY NEWS

- QUEBEC AND SEATTLE REGISTER SHUTOUTS
- ACES SNAP CARDS STREAK
- WHALERS TOO GOOD AT HOME

Game of the Day:
Los Angeles Sharks 1 - 2 New England Whalers
Hartford Civic Centre, Hartford (Att: 14,510)

Not one of the rivalries we were expecting to crop up when the Mountain and Atlantic leagues merged, this may be the first genuine rivalry to develop that is purely based in the Premier League of Hockey - and it's all down to one man. Dave Scopelleti, judged as superfluous to requirements at LA, was sent to New England, where he is setting himself up as one of the goalies to watch this season. He's already held his former club to a shutout once this season (one of two in just 5 games) and tonight in Hartford he managed 28 saves to bring his new club the points again.

Brian Helms opened the scoring for New England when he scored on the powerplay, a pass from behind the net from Benjamin Suffa giving him the chance. But indiscipline seemed contagious at the Civic last night and Rajbir Johar got it back while Hartford were down two players (Gilbert and Luschik), scoring in a 2-on-1 rush.

The second period saw no scoring but did see a fierce fight between Terry Lowe and Ryan Delacourt that saw the players separated from each other and from half their match payment in accordance with the new, anti-fighting policy of the PLH.

The third and final period was all New England as they piled on 15 shots to LA's mere five - and that with two powerplays to the Sharks. Inevitably, the Whalers got one on net when Joseph Gilbert scored off Tom Mueller's set up from the blueline. Despite Matt Kavanagh's best efforts (42 stops) the defence for the Sharks was lacking and he couldn't do it all on his own. 28 saves was enough for Scopelleti to get the win in his column.

Elsewhere in the league, Quebec shut the Nationals out at home, winning 4-0 with two goals to Paul Schmidt in the last period rubbing salt into the wound, and Michael Pratt registering his first shutout of the season. The Nightmare also kept the Mustangs scoreless, with the rampaging Seattle team racking up four goals of its own, three of them in the last period as the much-vaunted Calgary backline seemingly imploded. Finally, the Cards improvement stumbled when they went down to the Aces at the Entertainment Centre 2-3, the game swinging against them on a Fred Seawright penalty for interference in the second. Ben Magnus scored for the Aces and then the Cardinals simply fell away to lose it in the third on a goal from Klaus Thorsen.
