Middle Atlantic League 1930
After 2 Pennants (1925 & 1926) and 2 lost Championship Series, the Cumberland Colts win their 1st MAL Cup, doing it as the runner-up team. Finishing the season 8 games out of 1st place, the Colts shelled the Pennant winning Stogies 4 games to 1. Although there are never-ending arguments about who the "real" champion is each off-season, the Pennant/Cup playoff configuration always brings out the fans.
On another note, the 1930-31 Winter Meetings were extended an extra day to conclude a contentious discussion. Three charter members of the league; Johnstown, Clarksburg, and Fairmont proposed expanding the 1931 season from 8 to 12 teams.
Commissioner Elmer Daily did not like the proposal, arguing an increase of 4 new teams would strain the leagues stability, but as the arguments went on, Jeanette and Charleroi saw the possibility that 4 new teams would likely rank them higher in the standings, increasing their attendance.
Try as he might, Commissioner Daily couldn't get a 4th vote to allow him to kill the proposal, and the team owners voted 5-3 in favor of expansion. Charleston (WV), Beckley (WV), Huntington (WV), and Hagerstown (MD) will join the league in 1931, and the schedule remained at 120 games.
