Because doing otherwise Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig are not Yankees and start as a free agents. Actually pretty much everyone starts as a free agent pre-1965. If you want that instead of the team a player is most associated with just turn on the draft. If you want them on their real teams activate historical transactions.
