Jets crash on the road
10/10/1991 22.05 PST

Hardly high-flying, the Winnipeg Jets rolled into San Jose and fell 7-1 to the Sharks tonight.

With all eyes on the Finnish Flash, it was the flying French Canadians that took over the scoresheet. Patrice Brisebois, Richer, and Lebeau combined for 6 points en route to a 7-1 rout.

Brisebois opened the scoring at 5.11 of the first with a powerplay goal, San Jose’s first of the year, and the goals kept coming. When it was all said and done, Brisebois had 2 powerplay goals, Richer a goal and 2 assists and Lebeau with one assist himself. Moose Jaw native Brent Gilchrist, doing yeoman work alongside Richer and Lebeau, had another 2 point night - his second 2 point night of the short season.

Gilchrist shrugged off the praise and complimented his line mates.“Anytime you play with Richer and Lebeau, they make things easier for you. You skate your line and they find you all by yourself.”

Coach Fyvie was happy with the effort. “It’s a home game and it’s about time we started taking it to the opposition. We were happy to get the match-ups we wanted and doubly happy to get 2 goals on the powerplay.”

For their efforts, Winnipeg struck on the powerplay themselves, with Thomas Steen finding the net behind Sharks starter Glenn Healy with the help of Finns Selanne (pictured) and Numminen at 7.58 of the second. The goal made it 4-1 but that was all the Jets could muster.

Also scoring for the Sharks was veteran all-star Peter Stastny, with one goal and two assists, Greg Hawgood with one goal, and Johan Garpenlov also with one goal. Glenn Healy was awarded the second star of the night with a phenomenal 33 save night.

For the season, San Jose has an even record of 2-2. Winnipeg’s record falls to 1-2-1.

The San Jose Sharks’ schedule takes them on the road for the next 3 games in 4 nights where they face the Blues, Blackhawks and Los Angeles Kings. Winnipeg remain in the Golden State for a meeting with the Kings on Oct 12th.
