I always made it a point to manually save via the action button and then go to the main screen before closing the app completely. I typically did not leave it running in the background.
After I start the game, I use the Continue Game function to load my save (I usually only have one save going at a time). It would load a date (in game) that was not consistent with where I was when I last saved the game.
Granted, I'm playing on a tablet and not my phone, but still an Android.
