The Pirates will begin the season with a seven-game road trip that starts with a four-game series in Cincinnati against the Reds.

The Pirates signed free agent RP Hi West to a 1-year contract worth a total of $830.

In the bottom of the third, Downey led off with an inside-the-park home run.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Reds attempted a squeeze bunt but Ewing failed to make contact and Downey was tagged out at home.

In the top of the sixth, Miller tied the game with a two-out RBI double. Gibson followed with a single that scored Miller to give the Pirates the lead.

After six: Pittsburgh 2 Cincinnati 1.

In the top of the seventh, Clarke added to the Pirates lead with a run-scoring double. Wilson brought Clarke home with a single.

In the bottom of the seventh, Egan brought a run home with a double.

In the top of the eighth, the Pirates got the run back with a Barbeau RBI double.

The Pirates pounded out 15 hits in the win.

Final score: Pittsburgh 5 Cincinnati 2.
