Actually - from your description it IS an offensive problem...
Your top line or even top two lines should be shoot + on ES, and either shoot + or ++ anytime your down goals in the game...
The only time I choose pass + is if my O line is 15 or above in passing between two of the three players on that line. Balanced play is reserved for generally being up by a goal and I only go defensive if my team is not as good as my opponents which is only most of the games!
If you check my Panthers thread you can see how I have my tactics set. even though I have my gameplay set to defensive, because I start at shoot + and shoot even more from there if I get down in the score my shot total regularly exceeds the opponent or we are neck and neck. , even though my gameplay is primarily defensive in nature.
