Friday, May 4, Year I

Today is P Antoine Redd's 31st birthday.

We are back home to begin a 10 game home stand with 3 games over the weekend against the Minnesota Twins. They just beat Seattle 2 games in Minneapolis. They beat us 2 of 3 last weekend in the Metrodome. They are currently 7th in scoring in the PCL with 3.5 runs per game (Portland is 9th with 3.4). The PCL League ERA is down to 3.37, so teams are having a tough time scoring, except for the Dallas Eagles, who are on pace to score 870 runs this season. They are a full run per game ahead of the second best offense, the Denver Bears. The Twins are 10th in runs allowed with 4.2 per game (Portland is 1st with 3.2).

Minnesota Twins (11-15 .423 6.5 GB in 5th place in the PCL East) at
Portland Beavers (14-12 .538 0.5 GB tied for 2nd place in the PCL West)

MIN: Jose Nieves (28-R 2-4 4.15 ERA) vs. POR: Ron Wolf (27-R 3-2 4.93 ERA)

Nieves was the one guy of theirs we beat last weekend, scoring 6 runs off him in 3.2 innings.

Top of the First:
Dwight Marshall, who has a 12 game hitting streak, grounds out to 3rd. Roberto Rodriguez grounds out to 2nd. Mike Francoeur grounds out to the pitcher! 1-2-3!

Bottom of the First:
Perry Templet grounds out to short. Howard McNeal grounds out to 3rd. Dale Ainsworth works the count full, but then grounds out to short.

Bottom of the Third:
We load the bases up, but with 2 outs, our awesome cleanup hitter, Jeff Austin, grounds out to the pitcher...

Top of the Fourth:
Mike Francoeur leads off with a double and scores on a 1 out single by Marcos Falcon. 1 to 0, Twins.

Through 6 innings, we only have 3 hits...

Bottom of the Seventh:
With 2 outs and the bases empty, we pinch-hit for P Ron Wolf. PH Gordon Saunderson takes the count full and then draws a walk. Perry Templet follows with a triple to right center to tie the game at 1 apiece!! Howard McNeal grounds out to 3rd to end the inning.

Top of the Eighth:
New Pitcher: Barry Chapman (26-R), to face 1 batter before we bring in a lefty. He gets an out. New Pitcher: LHP Jerry Wilhelm (32-L). He gets his 2 outs.

Bottom of the Eighth:
Dale Ainsworth leads off with a walk. Jeff Austin swings and misses a 3-1 pitch, but the umpire calls catcher's interference and we have two on with no outs! On the first pitch to Gary Long, we pull off a double steal! Long walks to load the bases up! Still, they stick with starter Jose Nieves. With the infield in, Randy James grounds into a force at home, 4-2. 1 out. Dennis Webb flies out to right and Ainsworth trots home. 2 to 1, Beavers! Dave Lesley grounds out to short to end the inning. 1 run from the bases loaded with no outs, is not acceptable, but hopefully enough.

Top of the Ninth:
PH Jim Thut (25-R) is announced, so we make a Call to the Bullpen: Don Schmidt (26-R). Thut strikes out! PH Don Morse (26-L), who is 1 for 15 with a home run on the season. He lines a hit to right. PH Juan Reyna (33-L). who is 4 for 10 (.400) on the season. He strikes out looking! 2 outs. Miguel Cintora grounds out to short and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers!
