This came up in relation to the issue I reported yesterday. I have noticed that any time you set a pitcher to Retired, his role becomes Reliever, even if he was previously a Starting Pitcher previously.
Brief explanation: The league I run uses a manual draft that uses players from throughout history. I have imported the best season of every player in the main database (along with selected Japanese and Negro League players), but have set all those not currently on a team to Retired. When a player is picked, I then adjust their ratings to reflect the settings for my league (currently 1977 -- which means that, e.g., for today's pitchers I have to throttle down their Velocity and Stuff and dial up their Stamina, and do the reverse for Dead Ball Era pitchers) and Unretire them. This is why I wind up having to change pitcher roles so often
