Adams Black Jack Gum
Thomas Adams of Staten Island, New York is credited as the father of chewing gum. In 1871 Adams received the first patent on a gum-making machine and began mass producing a chicle-based gum. He began to experiment with flavorings, beginning with sarsaparilla. In 1884, he began adding a licorice flavoring and called his invention Adams' Black Jack, the first flavored gum in America.
Many of Adams' gum products were advertised in east coast ballparks and were changed almost annually. This re-creation is based on the signboard from 1918 Polo Grounds IV LCF bleachers. An excellent color ad from a 1921 World Series program served as the perfect reference.
