MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
LOHRMAN BLANKS YANKS FOR 16TH STRAIGHT WIN
Cleveland Indians righthander Bill Lohrman is about as close to a guaranteed victory as you will find. Lohrman improved to 7-0 this season and stretching back to last year has won his last 16 straight decisions after Cleveland blasted New York 7-0. Lohrman went the distance allowing just 4 hits and lowering his league leading era to 0.90. Mike Tresh hit his second homer in as many days to lead the Tribe offense.

The Chicago White Sox mounted a huge comeback to beat the St Louis Browns 4-3 in 10 innings. Trailing 3-0 in the top of the ninth outfielder Danny Litwhiler hit a 3-run homer to tie the game for Chicago and then St Louis starter Tom Baker threw a wild pitch in the top of the 10th that allowed pinch runner Bob Maier to score the winning run.

In other American League games Red Barrett tossed a 5-hit shutout as Washington blanked Philadelphia 9-0. In Boston, Joe Gantenbein and Dom Dallessandro homered as Detroit doubled the Red Sox 10-5.

In the National League Ken Raffensberger and the Braves blanked Chicago 2-0. Raffensberger tossed a complete game 4-hitter to even his record at 3-3.

Stan Ferens seems to be fully recovered from the back injury that cost him nearly a full year. The Cardinals veteran starter improved his record to 2-1 with his second straight complete game 5 hitter, this one a 4-0 win in Pittsburgh. Whitey Kurowski and Marty Marion each had 3 hits for St Louis.

Joe Medwick and Johnny Ripple homered as Cincinnati hammered Philadelphia 16-4 while Hank Leiber's 2-run double in the top of the ninth gave the New York Giants a 5-3 win in Brooklyn. Giants rookie catcher Yogi Berra enjoyed his first 3 hit game.

NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION OFFSEASON NOTES
NBA DRAFT PRIMER - TWO WASHINGTON GUARDS MAY GO IN ROUND 1
University of Washington hoops fans were more than a litte dissappointed to learn that guards Bob *Harrison and George *Feigenbaum were turning pro after their sophomore seasons. Harrison in particular will be missed after leading the team in assists and finishing second in scoring with 14.9 ppg. Feigenbaum was bothered by minor injuries all season and never did get in the starting lineup during his two years with the Huskies. However, he has a higher upside as far as NBA scouts are concerned.

GOLF - BING CROSBY PRO-AM
WEETMAN LEADS AFTER FIRST ROUND OF CROSBY
Britian's Harry Weetman has a 2 stroke lead after the opening round of the Bing Crosby Pro-Am. Weetman, who played on the Del Monte course has a 2 stroke lead on Sam King, who also played Del Monte. Half of the field played Del Monte and the other half played Cypress Point. They will switch for Friday's second round and then the entire field plus the top six amateurs will compete at Pebble Beach for Saturday's final round.

Among the amateurs Scott xTibbetts, who tied for second last week in Phoenix, contined his hot play with a 70 yesterday. xTibbetts played at Del Monte and he is tied with William Scarborough III, who also shot a 70 but at the tougher Cypress Point course. Among the celebrity amateurs, UCLA hoops star and possible NBA draft pick Chet McNabb carded an impressive 77 with host Bing Crosby just a stroke behind him.

BOXING
KANE WINS SLUGFEST WITH HERMAN
Peter Kane and Vic Herman went toe-to-toe for 9 rounds in Glasgow before the referee stopped their bantamweight bout due to heavy bleeding around both of Herman's eyes. With the TKO Kane, who was ahead on all 3 scorecards, moves to 17-2-1. Herman falls to 14-4-2 but he certainly gave the Liverpool lad some competition. Both fighters looked like they had been in a war when it was over as Kane was bleeding from the mouth and from a bad gash above his right eye.

There is boxing action in the USA tonight as a pair of top featherweight contenders will meet at National Hall in San Francisco. Seattle's Harold Hoshino will take on Charlie Riley. Hoshino, known as the Japanesse Sandman, is considered the top contender for World Champion Willie Pep's crown. Hoshino is 25-3-1 with 18 knockouts. Riley, who hails from St Louis, is 22-4 with 12 ko's and considered the 5th best featherweight in the world. Hoshino and Riley have met once before, early in the postwar tournament with Hoshino scoring a second round TKO. It is expected the winner of this fight will get a shot at Pep.
