For young guys, the longer the better. If it looks like they're the real thing, you want to lock them down for as long as possible, since their next contract will certainly be much larger. Just be careful not to turn them off to your club, since the young studs usually know this too. i've never been able to sign an under-25 stud for more than 4-5 years, unless I'm already offering a superstar contract.
For older guys, I usually sign them through 37-38 years old max. Most players start declining around then.
