Looks like I would have won the HR bet, but I'd much rather have had the WS win. Pitching turned out to be more effective than expected.
Matt already did a good job of summing up the 1948 World Series in the TWB thread, but just for my own records, taking a glace at the box scores anyway...
1948 World Series
9/25 DET @ PHI: WIN 9-6 Hal Andrew (1-0, 6.75) gave up 6R in 8IP but still got the win. Mike Downey (1Sv, 0.00) pitched a hitless 9th for a save. Dan Volpe (0-1, 14.40) had a rougher outing giving up 8R in 5IP for the loss. 1B Lonnie Arrendale (1 for 4, 1R, 2RBI, 1HR), C Chuck Rauch (2 for 4, 1R, 2RBI, 2DBL), SS Ted Stuart (2 for 4, 1R, 1BB, 1DBL) were top PHI batters. For us, Bud Moore got POG going 3 for 4, 1R, 3RBI, 1BB, 1HR. Ray Kress went 2 for 4, 1R, 1RBI, 1HR. Carl Sandoz went 2 for 4, 1R, 1RBI, 1DBL. Rollin Fish went 2 for 4, 3R, 1BB. We had the game in hand from the start although the Phillies put a scare into us with a 4 run 8th.
9/26 DET @ PHI: WIN 5-2 Billy Crowell (1-0, 1.04) was excellent giving up only 2R (1ER) and 6 hits in 8.2IP for the win and POG. Bob Guilderson (1Sv, 0.00) recorded the final out for a save. John Nolting (0-1, 1.00) gave up 5R in a CG loss, but only 1R was "earned". C Chuck Rauch was the only hot PHI batter going 2 for 4, 1R, 1RBI, 1DBL. For us, Matt Perly went 2 for 4, 1RBI. Carl Sandoz was 2 for 4, 2R, 2DBL. Luther Ormiston hit a 3RBI double with his only hit of the day. Again, we take an early lead and hold on. We out hit PHI 7 to 6, but their 4 errors to our 2 proved costly.
9/28 PHI @ DET: WIN 9-8 Harley Melzer gave up 4R in 8IP. But the game wasn't decided until the 11th where Alex Footwangler (1-0, 0.00) got the win for pitching a scoreless final inning. Mickey Lonergan gave up 5R in 8IP, but the loss went to Bill Risner (0-1, 6.75) who gave up a run in the final 1.2IP. Top PHI batters were 2B Pokey Dorsey who went 2 for 4, 1R, 1BB and LF Lee Friedman who went 1 for 3, 1R, 3RBI, 3BB, 1DBL. That 3RBI double by Lee did the most damage in a 7R 9th inning by them. For us, Ray Kress went 2 for 5, 1R, 2RBI, 1HR. Rik the Greek Kaladimos went 2 for 4, 1R, 1BB. Matt Perly hit a solo HR with his only hit. Luther Ormiston was name dPOG going 2 for 3, 1R, 3RBI, 2BB, 1HR. On field manager Arden Killbreath got himself thrown out in the 9th in and attempt to get the Tigers fired up after giving up 7 runs in the 9th. We responded with 3 runs in the bottom of the 9th and then the game winning run in the 11th.
9/29 PHI @ DET: loss 1-2 Hal Andrew (1-1, 4.24) pitched an awesome game giving up only 2R, 4hits, 1 walk in a CG loss. Dan Volpe (1-1, 6.23) also pitched well giving up 1R in 8IP for POG and the win. A save went to their closer Doyle Weaver (1Sv, 3.00) for shutting us down in the 9th. C Chuck Rauch was top PHI batter going 2 for 4, 1R. For us, only Luther Ormiston hit well going 2 for 4, 1R, 1RBI, 1HR. Luther's HR was in the 9th off of Volpe but wasn't enough to spark a rally.
9/30 PHI @ DET: loss 3-5 Billy Crowell (1-1, 3.06) gave up 5R in a CG loss. John Nolting (1-1, 2.12) allowed only 3R in 8IP for the win. Doyle Weaver (2.25) struck out 2 in the final inning for his second save of the series. PHI RF Nicky Barker was top batter going 2 for 3, 3R, 1RBI, 1BB, 1DBL, 1TRPL. For us, Matt Perly went 2 for 4, 1R. David Castaneda went 2 for 4, 1RBI. Luther Ormiston hit a 2R HR with his only hit of the day. Both teams were held to 6 hits. This was a tough loss as we truly wanted to close out the series at home.
10/2 DET @ PHI: loss 5-6 Harley Melzer gave up 5R (4ER) in 9IP. But the loss went to Lloyd Wyman (0-1, 9.00) who was unable to hold in the 11th. Mickey Lonergan gave up 5R in 9IP. The win went to Bill Bailey (1-0, 6.00) who pitched the final 1.1 without giving up a run. We have been an excellent extra innings team this year but our best bull pen pitcher couldn't hold on today. We out hit them 14 to 12 and had the game won until their 4 run 8th inning. A solo HR by Lonny Arrendale sparked a rally in that inning... a 2RBI double by Lee Friedman was also clutch in the 8th. For us, Carl Sandoz went 4 for 6, 1R, 1DBL. Matt Perly went 2 for 4, 1R, 1RBI, 1BB. David Castaneda went 3 for 4, 1R, 1RBI.
10/3 DET @ PHI: loss 3-4 Hal Andrew (1-2, 3.51) gave up 4R in 8.2IP, but only 2 of those runs were earned as 2 errors in our mid-infield proved costly. Dan Volpe got POG giving up only 3R & 5 hits in a CG win. 1B Lonny Arrendale went 2 for 4, 1R, 1RBI, 1HR. C Chuck Rauch went 2 for 4. LF Lee Friedman went 2 for 4, 1R, 1DBL. For us, David Castaneda was our top hitter going 1 for 3, 2RBI, 1DBL. We got out hit 10 to 5 and committed 2 errors to their none.
Luther Ormiston was our WS MVP hitting .310, 3HR, 10RBI.
Ray Kress is normally also Mr. Clutch for us, but he only managed .200, 2HR, 5RBI. The Phillies pitchers did a good job at keeping Kress quiet. Actually, neither team put up huge offensive numbers as I kind of expected.
Still, this series was quite the nail biter and I was glad to be a part of it.
