8/16 BOS @ DET:
WIN 6-5 Harley Melzer gave up 5R in 8.2IP, but Mike Downey (10-3, 4.67) got the final out and the win as we score 2 in the 9th. Sonny Faulkner gave up 4R in 8IP but the loss went to Billy Hyberg (2-4, 3.46) who gave up the game winning run. Despite the loss, BOS 2B Skeeter Schaldemose got POG going 3 for 4, 2R, 4RBI, 1BB, 2HR, 1SB. For us, Bud Moore went 3 for 4, 1R, 3RBI, 1DBL, 1HR. Carl Sandoz went 2 for 4, 2R, 1RBI, 1BB, 1DBL. Tom Hoelscher filled in at SS and went 2 for 4, 1R, 1TRPL.
8/17 BOS @ DET:
loss 4-8 Bob Guilderson (11-8, 4.85) gave up 8R (7ER) in 6.2IP for the loss. Alter Sennelnekoff (7-2, 4.19) got the win giving up 4R in 8IP. CF Al Arsenault got POG going 1 for 3, 1R, 2RBI, 1HR. C Em Pelto also played well going 2 for 4, 2R, 1RBI, 1BB, 1DBL. For us, Luther Ormiston went 3 for 5, 1R, 1RBI, 1HR. Carl Sandoz went 3 for 5. Matt Perly went 2 for 4, 1R, 1BB. Bud Moore went 2 for 4, 1R, 2RBI, 1HR. Rik the Greek Kaladimos went 2 for 4. John Degal hit a PH solo HR... it was the longest of his career (394'). We out hit Boston 15 to 8, but out errored them 2 to 1.
8/18 BOS @ DET:
WIN 2-0 Billy Crowell (22-7, 3.05) got POG for a CG shutout. Cort "Muscles" Nagel also pitched well giving up only 5 hits and 2R in a CG loss. Cort also went 2 for 3 at the plate and his hitting .500 this year. Our top batter was Rollin Fish who went 2 for 4, 1R. Ray Kress hit a 2R HR with his only hit of the day.
8/19 DET @ StL:
WIN 3-0 Hal Andrew pitched 8.2 shut out innings for POG, but this game went 11 innings. Mike Downey (11-3, 4.58) subbed for Hal and pitched 1.1 no hit innings. Lloyd Wyman (1.92, 14Sv) finished the 11 inning shutout by pitching a hitless 11th. Eugene Sprecher also had an awesome game allowing only 3 hits, 0 walks, 0 runs in 9IP. But Herman Curoe (1-8, 7.32) blew the hold. We scored all of our runs in the 11th compliments of a Ray Kress 3R HR... he went 2 for 5, 1R, 3RBI, 1DBL, 1HR. We out hit StL 5 to 3. This was a nice pitchers dual until that 11th inning.
8/20 DET @ StL:
WIN 11-6 Harley Melzer (9-5, 3.61) got the win despite giving up 6R in 7IP. Buster Davis (2-1, 3.33) got hammered early and was pulled after giving 8R (5 in the 1st) in 3IP. Top Browns hitter was Dale Thompson who went 3 for 5, 3R, 1RBI. For us, Matt Perly got POG going 3 for 5, 1R, 7RBI, 1DBL, 1HR. Rollin Fish filled in at RF and hit a solo HR with his only hit.
8/21 DET @ StL:
loss 2-4 Bob Guilderson (11-9, 4.84) only allowed 3 hits and 3 walks but unfortunately 4R in a CG loss. He was facing our nemesis Cotton Simson. Cotton (18-9, 2.72) allowed 2R in 8IP for the Win and POG. CF John Fahringer and 1B Vince Chipple both homered for StL with their only hits of the game. Our top batter was Ray Kress who went 2 for 4, 1RBI, 1DBL, 1TRPL.
8/22 DET @ StL:
WIN 5-3 Billy Crowell (23-7, 3.05) got the win giving up 3R in 9IP. Lloyd Wyman (15Sv, 1.89) finished out the 10th for a save. Paul Rivest gave up only 3R in 9IP, but Herman Curoe (1-9, 7.52) came in for relief and blew the hold. LF John Fahringer (3 for 3, 1BB, 1DBL) and 2B Dale Thompson (2 for 4, 1BB, 1SB) were the top Browns hitters. For us, Carl Sandoz got POG going 4 for 5, 2RBI, 1BB, 1DBL. His double followed a PH double by John Degal. John's Double had knocked in the game winning run. Roxie Ligget filled in at 2B and went 2 for 3, 1R.
8/23 DET @ CHI:
loss 0-2 Another pitchers dual. Hal Andrew (17-9, 3.20) gave up only 2R in a CG loss. Earl Boyd (6-11, 3.95) threw a 4 hit, 1 walk CG shutout for the win and POG honors. Top Sox batter was RF Stu Cripps (2 for 3, 1R, 1BB, 2DBL) and SS Rex Seelinger (2 for 3). For us, Ray Kress went 2 for 4, but got no help.
8/24 DET @ CHI:
loss 4-7 Harley Melzer (9-6, 3.62) only allowed 3 hits, but unfortunately 7 walks and 3R in 7IP for the loss. Stretch Bussmann (20-8, 3.33) pitched 8 shut out innings for the win and POG. John Skoropat gave up 4R in the 9th, but we were too far behind for that to matter. 1B Edward Rossi (3 for 5, 1R, 2EBI) and 2B Tony Seats (2 for 3, 1R, 1RBI, 1BB, 1HR) were the top Sox batters. For us, the biggest highlight was yet another clutch PH effort for John Degal. This time a 2R HR.
8/25 DET @ CHI:
loss 4-7 Swept in Chicago. Bob Guilderson (11-10, 4.92) had another rough game giving up 7R (6ER) in 7.1IP. Corky Stell (12-7, 3.24) gave up 3R in 7IP for the win. Sox 1B Edward Rossi was given POG for going 1 for 3, 1R, 3RBI, 1BB, 1DBL. Their RF Stu Cripps also hit well going 3 for 5, 2R, 1SB. For us, Bud Moore went 4 for 5, 1RBI. Rik the Greek went 2 for 3, 2BB. John Degal got a start at 3B. Matt Perly strained his shoulder on a throw and will be day to day for about a week.
8/26 CLE @ DET:
WIN 6-3 Billy Crowell gave up 3R in the 9th, but then Mike Downey (12-3, 4.91) came in and finished the inning as well as pitching a scoreless 10th for a win. George Bowers had given up 3R in 8IP. But the loss went to Joe Koppenmeier who gave up 3R in the 10th compliments of a Luther Ormiston HR. 1B Albert Hippard was top hitter for CLE going 2 for 4, 1BB. For us, Rollin Fish went 2 for 4, 1R. David Castaneda and C John Degal both went 2 for 4. But of course, Luther Ormiston was POG for going 2 for 4, 2R, 5RBI, 1BB, 2HR.
8/27 CLE @ DET:
WIN 11-2 Hal Andrew (18-9, 3.17) gave up 2R in 8.2IP for the win and POG. George Kauffman (6-18, 6.29) got the hook after giving up 8R (3ER) in 3.2IP... 3 errors early in the game were most responsible for their loss. CLE 1B Albert Hippard and 3B Emerson Meggs had identical stat lines (2 for 4, 1R, 1RBI, 1HR). For us, Rik the Greek went 3 for 5, 1R. Ray Kress hit a solo HR with his only hit of the day. Luther Ormiston went 1 for 2, 2R, 1RBI, 3BB, 1HR. Hal Andrew hit a 2R TRPL with his only hit.
8/28 CLE @ DET:
WIN 7-6 A 3rd inning hour long rain delay was a factor on this game. Harley Melzer pitched 4.2 shutout innings. Alex Footwangler (2-2, 7.89) got the win despite pitching a 1R 8th. Lloyd Wyman (16Sv, 1.86) pitched a scoreless 9th for a save. Charley Nagel gave up 3R in the first 2.2 IP before getting the hook. The loss went to Dee Trivett (0-3, 4.80) who gave up 2 runs without recording an out in the 8th. CLE 3B Emerson Meggs (3 for 4, 1RBI, 1DBL, 1TPRL), RF Al Jackson (2 for 5, 2R, 3RBI, 1DBL, 1HR) and CF William Morgan (3 for 4, 1R, 1RBI) all hit well. For us, Ray Kress got POG going 2 for 4, 1R, 4RBI, 1BB, 1HR. Rollin Fish went 4 for 5, 3R, 1RBI, 1HR. Carl Sandoz went 3 for 4, 3R, 1RBI, 1BB, 1DBL, 1HR.

8/30 CHI @ DET:
WIN 1-0 Bob Guilderson (12-10, 4.74) got POG and the win pitching a CG shutout. Corky Stell (12-8, 3.10) pitched better than Bob, but gave up 1R in a CG loss. Top Sox batter was CF Homer Jewell who went 2 for 3, 1BB. For us, it was David Castaneda who went 2 for 3. The game winning run was knocked in by Bud Moore.
8/31 CHI @ DET:
WIN 1-0 Billy Crowell pitched 5 scoreless innings giving up only 2hits and 2 walks for POG and the win. Alex Footwangler, Mike Downey, and Lloyd Wyman (17Sv, 1.82) combined completed the shutout. Johnny Gordley pitched 4 shutout innings, but Tim Knapp (0-1, 2.35) was unable to hold. Once again, an hour long rain delay was a factor. Both teams were held to 3 hits. Top batter for the day was Bud Moore who went 1 for 2, 1BB.

88-47, #1 overall, 14 games ahead of Boston in the AL, 10-5 in the last 15
BAD NEWS
-Not really any bad news right off the top of my head... a few batters had a quiet month and our starters have missed out on some wins due to rain delays interrupting their starts.
GOOD NEWS
-Carl Sandoz kicked it into gear like I had hoped and got his average back up near .300.
-We got most of our players back from injury.
SEPTEMBER CALL UPS
-Isaac Mitchell has been called up to provide depth in the OF
-Steven Zucal has been called up to provide depth in the IF and give us a pinch runner that we very much need.
