CHAMPION CHAPS COACH STEPS DOWN
Nick Woods, who coached the Dallas Chaparrals to the NBA championship last week has announced his retirement. The 74 year old Woods had a career coaching record of 488-474 and retires after winning his first NBA title. The Chaps are expected to announce a replacement next week. Rumour has it assistant Mickey Smith may be in line for the job.
Meanwhile, the other finalist has extended the contract of it's coach. Terms were not released but Baltimore will bring veteran coach Luke Ware back for at least one more season.
FORMER CCNY STAR MCCLINTIC RETIRES FROM NBA
Veteran New York Knickerbockers power forward Zaki McClintic has announced his retirement after a 13 year NBA career. McClintic never lived up to the hype surrounding him when he first entered the league after being named the NCAA player of the year in his final season at CCNY. A first round pick of Indianapolis (8th overall) in 1934 McClintic spent 4 seasons with the Olympians. He made the all-rookie team in 1934-35 by averaging 12.9 ppg and 7.0 rpg. He left Indianapolis for Buffalo in 1938 and was a key reserve on the Braves during his 4 years with that organization. He would then have stops in Syracuse, St Louis and Fort Wayne before winding up his career in the city he enjoyed his college success.
In 820 career games McClintic average 8.4 ppg. He played in 33 playoff games and was a key contributer in Indianapolis' run to the finals in 1935, a run that ulitmately fell short in a championship series 4-game sweep at the hands of Philadelphia.
BUCKEYE STARS HAVE EYES ON FIRST ROUND
In an effort to familiarize the readers with the top players available in the June 4th NBA draft, I will take a look back at the college careers of many of the potential first rounders. We start with a look at a couple of Ohio State Buckeyes who expect to hear their names called very early on June 4th.
Senior forward Paul *Huston is a possible first overall pick. Named to the Big 10 all-conference team, Huston was second in the conference in ppg (16.6) and third in rebounds (11.5). The one weak spot in his game has been his free throw shooting which has steadily got worse through his college career. After helping the Buckeyes to the elite 8 in 1945-46, Huston and his teammates were dissappointed to exit the NCAA tourney in the second round this season.
Huston holds the Ohio State record for points in a season with 643 in 1944-45 as well as the Big 10 record for field goals made in a season at 244.

Junior Ohio State center Arnie *Risen decide to forego his final year of eligibilty and enter the NBA draft where, despite a large number of centers available, he should be a mid-first round pick. Risen was third on the Buckeyes with 12.4 ppg and 9.7 rpg. He also led the team in blocked shots and led the Big 10 in field goal percentage. Risen has decent potential but might have been a first overall pick if he spent one more season in college.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
DEAN WINS AGAIN - YANKEES TOP SENS 3-2
Dizzy Dean improved his record to 5-0 and the New York Yankees continue to be the hottest team in baseball after a 3-2 win over the Senators in Washington. Veteran OF Dixie Walker delivered an rbi single in the first to give New York the early lead but Washington scored twice in the bottom half of the inning thanks to 4 singles off of Dean. From there Dean would settle down and allow just one more hit the rest of the way. The Yankees would scratch out a couple of runs in later innings off of losing pitcher Joe Haynes and Dizzy would have his 5th win of the season.
The 37 year old Dean is one of the biggest surprises of the season. He is 5-0 with a 1.85 era and putting up numbers that we have not seen from him since the late 1930's. The last time Dean won more than 9 games in a season was way back in 1939.
RED SOX WIN TWO IN A ROW
The Boston Red Sox are no longer the coldest team in the majors. That distinction now falls on the Chicago White Sox who suffered their 7th straight loss. The Red Sox got 4 rbi's from Stan Spence and 3 hits from Dom Dimaggio as they blasted the visiting White Sox 12-7 at Fenway.
In St Louis, Al Williams and Bob Muncrief combined on a 5-hitter as the Browns beat Detroit 2-1 in 10 innings. Sig Gryska drove in the winning run with a bases loaded single off of Red Lynn.
Jeff Heath's 2-run triple in the bottom of the first helped Bill Lohrman run his record to 5-0 as Cleveland doubled Philadelphia 4-2. Lohrman allowed 6 hits over 8 innings while Ray Poat pitched a scoreless ninth for his second save.
NATIONAL LEAGUE ROUNDUP
ROE OUTDUELS SCHANZ AS PIRATES TOP PHILS 4-1
Preacher Roe improved to 5-0 with a complete game 4-hitter as the Pittsburgh Pirates handed Charley Schanz his first loss of the season. Pittsburgh managed 11 hits off of Schanz (5-1) and beat the Phillies by a 4-1 score.
In other National League action:
Sam Chapman's 3-run homer keyed a 5-run outburst in the bottom of the 8th as Boston handed the New York Giants their 7th straight loss, 9-6. Braves starting pitcher Jesse Flores left the game in the fourth inning with a back injury. He was placed on the DL and will miss the next two weeks.
Enos Slaughter and Walker Cooper homered as St Louis doubled Cincinnati 8-4 while in Brooklyn, the Chicago Cubs beat up the Dodgers 11-3. Harlond Clift hit a pair of homers for the Cubs to give him 9 on the season.
FERENS RETURNS TO MOUND TONIGHT FOR ST LOUIS
After nearly a full year recovering from back surgery St Louis Cardinals pitcher Stan Ferens returns to action today in Cincinnati. Ferens was 25-12 two seasons ago and off to a 5-1 start last year before rupturing a disk in his back. It was the first major injury the 32 year old ever suffered and the Cards are anxious to see if he can pick up where he left off.

SEAHAWKS SIGN TE WILLIE MCKNIGHT
Former Baltimore Ravens tight end Willie McKnight has agreed to a 2 year deal with the Seattle Seahawks. McKnight, who has spent the last three seasons with the Ravens, started 15 games last year and had 48 catches incluidng a pair of touchdown grabs. His best year was 1945 when he had 62 catches during the season and another 16 in the playoffs as the Ravens won the NFL Championship. Originally drafted by Carolina in the 6th round of the 1941 draft, the former Temple start spent three seasons primarily on special teams for the Panthers before getting a chance to start when he joined the Ravens in 1944.
McKnight's arrival likely spells the end of Dale Heinrich's days as Seattle's starting tight end. The former Nebraska Cornhusker started every game in franchise history until losing his job to rookie Anthony LaFavor for a few weeks last season. Heinrich and LaFavor combined to make 40 catches a year ago.
In other signing news Oakland inked punter Steve Wrightster to a 1-year deal. Wrightster spent 6 seasons as the Lions punter but they choose not to renew his contract this season. Wrightster will compete with incumbant Erwin Ortego for the starting job in Oakland.

EXCITEMENT STARTING TO BUILD AT THE BRICKYARD
Testing is underway all this week at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway as drivers prepare for this weekend's first stage of qualifying. In practice runs Ted Horn appears to have the quickest car as he unofficially was approaching speeds of 128 miles an hour. The fastest time ever recorded in qualifying was 130.138 set by Jimmy Snyder in 1939.
In addition to Horn, other drivers who looked very good in Tuesday's practice include Rex Mays, Freddie Agabashian and Shorty Cantlon.
