I noticed that when you copy files with XP, sometimes it hangs onto them and won't let you delete the files. I seen the game do the same thing, usually a reboot will solve the problem.
If not, go into safe mode and you should be able to delete them.
Also, there is a folder under WINDOWS called prefetch. They may be associated using that. You can safely delete the files in the prefetch folder and I recommend you do it anways after a couple months to clear the garbage out.
