5/16 THRU 5/31

5/16 DET @ WSH: loss 1-8 Alan Paule (1-1, 16.20) got his first start of the year and was injured 1.1 IP into the game. He gave up 3R and got the loss. Zolly Schoeter (3-2, 3.43) got the win giving up 1R in 8.2IP. POG honors want to WSH SS Hitman Crocitto who went 3 for 5, 3R, 2RBI, 1HR, 1SB. For us, Carlton Affee went 3 for 5, 1R, 1RBI, 1DBL, 1HR. John Dirt Bag Degal was called up and got an immediate start at catcher. He went 2 for 4 in his first ML game. Unfortunately, Paule will be day-2-day for the next 5 weeks with a strained tricep (Why does this almost always have to happen on the first game of a two week sim? )

5/17 PHI @ DET: WIN 6-1 Billy Crowell (10-1, 1.70) was awesome again, giving up 1R in a CG POG Win. Ken Malia (1-2, 4.15) got the loss giving up 6R in 4.2IP. LF Hershel Cooley was the A's top batter going 3 for 4, 1R, 2SB. For us, Bud Moore went 2 for 3, 2RBI, 1BB, 1DBL. Luther Ormiston went 1 for 2, 2R, 2RBI, 2BB, 1HR. Luther moves into a tie with Kress in the HR race at 9. Matt Perly is only 1 behind at 8HR.

5/18 PHI @ DET: WIN 5-0 Hal Andrew (7-1, 3.47) pitched 8.1 shut out innings for POG honors and the win. Walt Gajan finished the shutout pitching a hitless finally two outs. Chubby Allen went the distance for the A's but gave up 5R. Top PHI batter was young SS Ace Habermehl who went 2 for 3, 1BB. For us, Matt Perly went 3 for 4, 1R. Hal Andrew went 2 for 3. Luther Ormiston went 2 for 4, 1R, 1DBL. Bud Moore hit a 3R HR with his only hit of the day.

5/19 PHI @ DET: WIN 8-5 Bob Guilderson gave up 5R (4ER) in 7.2IP. Lloyd Wyman (3-1, 0.44) finished out the 8th for the win. Alex Footwangler (8.53, 5Sv) pitched a hitless 9th for a save. Bob Stevens went 7.2IP, but gave up 7R for the loss. Top A's batter was LF Greg Morris who went 2 for 4, 1RBI. For us, Bud Moore got POG for going 3 for 4, 4RBI, 1BB. David Castaneda got thrown out in the 7th for arguing a strike out with the ump.

5/20 StL @ DET: loss 2-9 Alan Paule (1-2, 11.25) started despite his injury and gave up 6R in 7IP for the loss. Paul Rivest gave up only 2R in a CG win. 5/22 StL @ DET: loss 1-9 Hal Andrew (7-2, 3.84) gave up 7R (6ER) in 6 IP for the loss. Four of those runs were in the 1st. Cotton Simson (6-3, 3.00) pitched great giving up only 1R in a CG win. POG was Brown's 1B Vince Chipple who went 2 for 4, 1R, 5RBI, 1HR. For us, Iggy Chennault went 3 for 4, 1RBI filling in at 3B. Matt Perly went 2 for 4, 1R, 1DBL. We weren't out hit today (9 to 9) and we committed fewer errors (1 to 2), but StL was much more efficient with their hits.

STANDINGS
#1 in the AL, 3.5 games ahead of St. Louis, 6-8 in the last 14

BAD NEWS
-Five consecutive losses and 1-7 (from 5/20 to 5/29) was a huge disappointment.
-Several hitters were quiet for the last couple of weeks of May. Ray Kress nearly saw his avg dip below .300. When Ray isn't hitting, we are in trouble.
-Alan Paule was injured in his first start of the year but pitched from the #4 spot anyway (1-3) for two weeks. He will be replaced by Melzer who should now be healthy.
-AAA SP Eral Roberts will miss a couple of months due to a pulled tricep muscle.
-A 2B Rob Bell will also miss about 2 months with a torn calf muscle.

GOOD NEWS
-Billy Crowell got his second consecutive POM awards. This time for going 6-1, 2.03.
-Matt Perly gives us our second consecutive BOM award. He hit .402 and had 4HR, 31RBI in May.
-Luther Ormiston had a hot final two weeks. He now leads the AL in HRs (14), RUNs (55 from the cleanup spot), DBLs (20), OBP (.481), SLG (.719) and is second in RBI (55), second in AVG (.375), and third in BB (39). This guy needs a nick name... suggestions will be considered.
-AL Runs: Luther #1, Ray Kress #2, Calton Affee #3, Carl Sandoz #5.

ROSTER CHANGES
-John Dirt Bag Degal has been treading water in the Minors for four years. I've called him up to the AR so that Bud Moore can take him under his wing and hopefully light a fire under his butt. He's got too much potential so his lack of progress required me to take drastic measures.
-Vincent Solinger had to be demoted to make room for Degal. Unfortunately, he won't make it to Buffalo AAA. He'll be claimed on waivers by someone. We will miss his skill behind the plate very much.
