Historical leagues usually last longer because they attract an "older" crowd who think more long term about the game. The modern day leagues usually fill quickly because they attract the younger crowd but they almost always fade out because school & social time usually wins out over an online league. Also the younger person's attention span is usually less focused on an online league.
And before you young people start flaming away, this is not an insult, it is just a fact that someone who is 14-25 probably has a few more things happening in their life that is going to distract them from an online league than someone who is married with 3 kids and loves playing in an online league as a distraction from the wife!
