1967 Heavyweight and Light Heavyweight Replay

01/17/67 Tuesday

Terry Daly – HW (1-0-0) vs. Len Rocky James – HW (6-11-0)

Terry Daly - UK Rating 1
Heavyweight 1966-69
16 wins / 3 losses / 0 draws / 13 KO

Hometown/Birthplace: Battersea, Enland

Daly's first 10 victories were by TKO, the longest fights lasting into the 4th round. Not much at all to look at in opponents in those first 10 wins, the best maybe being Derek Groombridge who was a career 10-8-0,1KO who had the only winning record amongst those opponents. During the time of those 10 wins, Daly suffered 2 losses, both at the hands of Len Rocky James. The first, in Daly's 2nd career fight in January 1967, James KO'd Daly in the 3rd round. In the 2nd fight in Feb 1968, James won by 1st round TKO.

After the 2nd James loss, Daly won his next 7 fights including wins over Dennis Avoth(22-21-3,4), Obe Hepburn, Vic Moore and Rudolph Vaughan(12-12-0,10). Then in Sept 1069 he climbed into the ring against Bunny Johnson, for his first real test against any fighters of any talent. Daly failed the test, with the fight stopped in the 1st round. Maybe realizing his true lack of talent and ability, Daly never fought again.

Len never built any consistancy in his career. He started out 3-7-0 with 2 of those victories when his opponents Charlie White and JIm Monaghan were disqualified. The other win was a 6 round decision over Billy Wynter(12-31-3,5). He lost by 5th round TKo to Ron Gray(20-20-2,10) and then lost an 8 round decision to Carl Gizzi, a 6 round decision to Wynter and then lost by 5th round TKo in June 1965 in a fight for the Welsh Heavyweight Title.

Later fights against some opponents we've seen thus far in the game were wins over Terry Daly twice and Doyle Brown and losses against Ermanno Festorazzi, Rocky Campbell, Brown, and Roger Tighe.

The Fight....
Daly is fighting his 2nd career professional bout having won his debut a month ago with a 4th round TKO of Derek Groombridge. James has been around since 1963. He’s faced Carl Gizzi a couple times as his biggest competition in a lackluster career thus far. He’s coming off 3 straight defeats hoping to get untracked against the green Daly. As it turned out James KO’d Daly in the 3rd round in what was to be the first of only 3 defeats against 16 wins in Daly’s brief career.
Our replay, a scheduled 6 round went the full distance. It turned out all Daly’s show to reverse the actual outcome in 1967. It was a Unanimous Decision for Daly scoring 60-51, 60-51, 59-53. Daly dropped James for a 6 count in the 3rd and then sent him into the canvas again in the 5th for an 8 count. That round pulled the win into the clear open for Daly. James managed to regroup himself and fight a tight 6th round, but by then it was too late with an insurmountable advantage for James to overtake.
