The ratings drop seems pretty typical for players at the age of 35 or older. In my 1931 league, Ruth hit 53 HR at age 36 and dropped to 19 in 1932 with basically all his ratings in the tank and leading the league in k's. He retired at the end of '32, well short of 714.

I've also noticed Jim Eisenreich from the Phillies went from a very high 60's contact (maybe a 70) in '93 to a 52 contact by middle May of '94 and there were no injuries. He's 35 in the game.
