I offered him 1.86 for 3 more years and he took it during August.....and then suddenly after accepting his player history says "he's declining fast....and may be thinking about retiring already" and he basically orocedes to struck out the rest of the season
Why give him the extension in August? I always wait right before "Proceed to Next Seasion" to start with that.
Its not as though you gave him a huge contract but giving him 3 years was obviously a mistake. With older players like that I would rather over-pay for one year or two maximum.
Actually, with players in their late 30s I've had success by signing them 4-5 year deals for dramatically less salary--knowing that they would retire in about two years and let me out of the contract. Rather than $1.8m, the guy probably could have had him for $1.1m or so.
