Oh and by the way... you weren't fooled. Just recognize that players drop extremely fast in ratings once they hit that breaking point. A star player like this probably took almost two full seasons to plummet but some can pretty much disappear in one year. I have yet to see a player slowly decline over many years (except through "random" rating fluctuations).
My general rule of thumb is to sign a player until he reaches 36 or 37 and then sign them to one and two year contracts. If a player has just started to decline in ratings you can be fairly certain he will have at least one good year left and possibly a second decent one but by the third they are usually a bench player at best.
