"who" is the runner on first and on any groundball that may turn into a doubleplay it is his responsibility to try to "take out the fielder" which on this play will be either the SS or 2Bman that recieves the throw at second for the first out. He does this by sliding directly at the player so he cannot get off a good throw. This forces the defensive player to either jump over him and throw or try to throw while moving to the side or throw while being hit. As long as the baserunner can reach the base with any part of his body the slide is legal. IF he cannot reach the base the slide is illegal and the umpire will call interference and the batter running to first will be out.
New to baseball, eh. Cool. Alot of the fun of the game is learning all the little things that go on in a game that the average guy doesn't even consider. Most of the people that think baseball is boring or don't like to sit through a good 2-1 pitcher's dule probably don't really understand the game and all the strategy and little things that are going on as the game developes. There's always something new to learn even for us guys that have been watching for over 30 years.
