By nature, a signing bonus is always paid up front. That said, I imagine how they happen in real-life is subject to the terms of the agreement. There can always be negotiation to spread payments out and clauses if certain things happen, so long as the player agrees to it or is properly incented.
But that's just applying logic to it...may not be a good idea when it comes to compensation in professional sports.
