First off, I love the Red Sox and have all of my life growing up in Rhode Island and now living in MA. And I hate the Yankees with a passion. All this lovey dovey bulls**t about how nice the Yankee players are and how Jeter and Nomar are good friends, doesn't fly with me baby. I jumped for joy when the D Backs beat Rivera and the Yankees last fall.
With that said, you have to realize that most Red Sox fans (I'd say 2/3 of them) are brutally optimistic. I, after 30 years on this earth, as a Red Sox fan have come to accept and expect the June swoon followed by the wilting of August. It's part of summer in new england just like dead grass, tourist season on the cape, and chowda and fried clams at Aunt Carries (Rhode Island).
The Yankees have assembled what is probably the best offensive lineup since the 99 Indians or the 75 Reds. Once their 3 big starters (Roger, Moose, Pettitte) regain their form in late august it will be garbage time, they will blow the Sox away gaining a 10 game lead. Nothing about the Yankees tells me that they will be a weaker team down the stretch run on August and September. As much as I hate to admit this all, it is merely the reality.
Ofcourse, there's definitely going to be a work stoppage and a WS cancellation so who cares, this season doesn't count anyways.
