BILLY REAY HAT TRICK HELPS HABS EVEN SERIES WITH DETROIT
Billy Reay scored three goals and added an assist to lead the Montreal Canadiens to a 6-3 win over the Red Wings in Detroit. The Habs victory evens the best of seven semi-final at 1 game apiece with games 3 and 4 in Montreal this weekend. Reay scored the first three Montreal goals as the Canadiens built a 3-1 lead after two periods. The game was more lobsided than the score indicated as Montreal had outshot Detroit 42-18 through two periods. Only a second straight outstanding effort from Red Wings goaltender Harry Lumley kept the Canadiens from reaching double-digits on the scoreboard. For the game Montreal outshot Detroit 59-29.
Leo Gravelle, Jimmy Peters and Maurice Richard also scored for the Canadiens while Ted Lindsay, with a pair, and Jim Conacher where the Detroit marksmen.

LEAFS BLOWOUT RANGERS IN SERIES OPENER
Rookie Howie Meeker scored twice as the Toronto Maple Leafs shelled Chuck Rayner and the New York Rangers 5-1 in the opener of their best of seven semi-final series at Madison Square Garden. Meeker's goals both came in the second period with the first one being a shorthanded marker that took the wind out of the Rangers sails and gave Toronto a 3-0 lead at the time. Bill Ezinicki, Harry Watson and Bud Poile also scored for the Leafs who firesd 39 shots at Rayner and Sugar Jim Henry, who took over in the New York cage midway through the third period.

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE OFFSEASON NOTES
JETS RESIGN QUARTERBACK REEVES
After letting him test free agency the New York Jets have decided to retain quarterback Keith Reeves, inking the fourth year pro to a 6 year deal. Reeves was a restricted free agent but received no offers aside from the Jets. He has started every game at quarterback for the Jets each of the last three seasons but his QB rating has gone down and his interceptions have gone up each of the three years. Last season his rating was just 67.5 and he tossed 24 interceptions. He was 12-4 and helped the Jets to the playoffs in his first season but the club suffered through a 5-11 campaign the following season. Last year New York was 7-9 and missed the playoffs for the second straight season - a first for the franchise that had been in the postseason three of the first four years of the league. The Jets had made a halfhearted effort at signing Vaughn Diedrick but after Diedrick signed with Philadelphia the Jets had to turn their attention back to Reeves.
The Jets also announced they have resigned punter Herb Bright who has been with the club for the past three seasons. The only other signing news came out of St Louis where the Rams resigned kicker Jason Johnson. Johnson was perfect on extra points and 25-for-35 on field goal attempts a year ago.
BOXING NEWS
Charley Williams knocked out Harry Mathews in the second round of their lightheavyweight bout in New York. Mathews seemed to be in control of the round until Williams landed a wild overhead right that landed flush. With a career record of 18-8-1, Williams is moving up the lightheavyweight rankings. Just 20 years old, the Kansas City native is now ranked 9th in his weight class. Mathews suffered his 4th loss to go with 28 victories and he has now slipped out of the top 10 in the weight class. In another lightheavyweight match on the same card Fitzie Fitzpatrick won a split decision over Gus Lesnovich.
In Cannes, Marcel Cerdan retained the European Middleweight Title with a 12th round TKO win over German Jupp Besselmann. Cerdan improves to 25-5 and may be in line for a shot at World Middleweight Champion Tony Zale next year. The loss drops Besselmann to 23-15.
