I think the swirl around the woodmark really improves it.
What is "primary", "woodmark" and "secondary"?

Primary- The primary logo is the main logo for the team. This typically is the most complex, and detailed logo. The primary usually has an icon, and full text (for a sports team, that would mean a.) city name, and b.) team name.) For a company, the primary logo may also include a slogan (such as the one you see above).
Secondary- The Secondary is usually just the icon or symbol (the graphical part of the logo). Sometimes text is included in the secondary logo, however, unlike the primary, it might be an abbreviation, just the city name, or just the team name, rather than a combination of the three.
Woodmark- The woodmark is usually just the text/type, in a solid color, or combination of colors. Sometimes, the main icon, or an alternate icon is included with the woodmark, but is much smaller.
Not sure how much that helps. If you need some visuals to compare with my descriptions, check out cuss's site
here. Click on the individual folders, and check out his primaries, secondaries, and woodmarks.
EDIT: Or just look about 7 posts up.
