You mention the OS automatically adding the extension. Does this mean that you have extensions set to being hidden by default? If so, I would suggest that you unhide them temporarily so you can see what you are really dealing with. One problem with having them hidden is this: Ty_Cobb.bmp appears as Ty_Cobb. If you then rename it to appear as Ty_Cobb.bmp, you now actually have a file called Ty_Cobb.bmp.bmp.
EDIT: After reading the above post, this stirs a memory. I think I remember someone mentioning problems when they used winrar to unzip the files. Do you have winzip?
