That very thread made me really fear for the future of OOTP. Basically, I think it boils down to two camps: the sabermetrics camp, which is obsessed with statistical realism, realistic player development and a bug-free game, and the bells-and-whistles camp, which prioritizes the MLB license, more and better options for in-game managing, and a general upgrade to the "roleplay" aspects of the game.
Since SI is very good at the roleplay aspects and Markus already seems to have a love for implementing new bells and whistles when the old ones don't work exactly right, I think it's clear the direction things are headed, particularly when you consider the fact that in the larger marketplace (sports fans rather than text sim fans), the bells-and-whistles camp is much larger. The sad thing is that a decision in this direction will make things worse for all concerned: the sabermetrics camp, while smaller, is a very vocal minority that can really build a LOT of grassroots support, or a LOT of grassroots opposition. (See the last few years of Baseball Mogul vs. the last few years of OOTP for examples.)
At any rate, I don't mind any additions to the next version, but if bugs dating back to OOTP 3 and 4 are still around, I'm not going to be happy about it. I actually think the time is ripe for a new baseball sim to come along.... hopefully that new sim will be the new-and-improved OOTP. If it's not, hopefully someone else will step in and fill the void.
