I started a 2003 season in OOTP5 and converted to OOTP6 in the middle of the 2008 season. It's now June 25, 2009. I control two teams, Cleveland in the AL and Pittsburgh in the NL. They've never faced each other (so far) in either interleague play or in post-season.

From the beginning I played out almost all my games. If I really get blown out I sim the rest of that game. Occasionally I sim a day (without even starting to play). But ordinarily I play all games for both teams. At the end of every day I review the minor leagues for both teams as well as the waiver wire, league leaders, etc.

It does take a LONG time to play this way, especially controlling two teams, but the total immersion factor makes it more than worthwhile, in my opinion.

My Cleveland team (controlled since the start of 2003) quickly became a dynasty. The Indians first went to the playoffs in 2004 as the wild card team, and have been there every year since, winning two World Series (in 2005 and 2007) in the process. Fan interest hit 100 in 2008 and has stayed at that level now for over a year.

I took control of the Pirates in mid 2006 because Cleveland was winning so much and the Pittsburgh franchise was a mess, mired deep in last place with a fan interest of 16. I wanted to see if I could do the same thing in Pittsburgh I did in Cleveland (while retaining control of the Indians).

It hasn't worked nearly so well in Pittsburgh. After three years fan interest is finally up to 46, and the Pirate's minor league system is second in baseball (just behind Cleveland's). But after three years, in June 2009, the Pirates are only two games above .500, even though they're finally in contention in a weak NL Central. Pittsburgh's payroll is 30th in baseball; it's stocked almost exclusively with young players (can't afford high priced FAs). My hope is that within another year I can have the Pirates winning regularly.

I still like playing out (almost all) my games. If I could, I'd probably play out AAA games, too (at least some of them). I've totally gotten to know almost all the players in both organizations. Yeah, seasons do go by at a snail's pace. But someone once said that baseball's not a game for a man in a hurry!

That's how I do it, and I still love every minute of it!
