I've seen the AI shell out some big contracts, though. The Angels signed Andy Pettitte for 5 years at over $19 million per year.

The most I've ever seen the AI sign someone for was something like $36 million per year. It was an idiotic, ridiculous signing, even if it did bring what was arguably the league's best player in its history to the team. They simply could not keep the guy and remain competitive. They didn't have enough for any other good players.
The most I've ever paid was, I think, just over $20 million, a few times. Usually, it's a mistake.
