3 - BRITISH OPEN MARATHON PLAYOFF
It took 23 playoff holes before Byron Nelson finally beat Australian Peter Thomson to win the British Open at historic St. Andrews. As one reader of TSN commented "I never knew golf could be this exciting." Nelson made a terrific charge on Sunday making up 5 strokes to force an 18-hole playoff on Monday. Nelson and Thomson each shot an even par 72 during the 18 hole playoff. At that point the two golfers returned to the first tee for a sudden death playoff. Both Nelson and Thomson parred each of the first 4 holes, all par fours. On the par 5 5th, Nelson sank a 30 foot birdie putt while Thomson came up short in his birdie effort
2 - STEVE VAN BUREN SHREDS THE DETROIT DEFENSE

Van Buren, who had touchdown runs of 99 and 76 yards, also had 4 catches for 25 yards and returned a pair of kickoffs for 42 yards. The previous single game rushing record was 268 yards set by rookie Antowain Anderson of Atlanta last year against Tampa.
